MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — The Keuka College Softball team earned a sweep at SUNY Morrisville in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
Lauren Gilbert threw a complete-game shutout for Keuka College (9-12, 3-3 Empire 8) in game one. Offense then reigned supreme as the Wolves scored 16 runs on 20 hits to defeat the Mustangs 16-6 in the nightcap.
Keuka College 2 at SUNY Morrisville 0 – Game One
The Wolves wasted no time taking the lead in the first inning.
Emily Cutrona led off with a single and stole second. She then scored as Grace Eagan reached on an error as the Wolves took a 1-0 lead.
Keuka College added to their lead with a run in the sixth.
Makenna DeMoney delivered a two-out double to score
Emily Cutrona and push the score to 2-0.
The story of the game, however, was Gilbert. The sophomore pitched the second complete-game shutout of her career, allowing just four hits and striking out five. She also got some defensive help as catcher
Makenna DeMoney caught the tying run off the game for the final out in the seventh inning to secure the victory.
Keuka College 16 at SUNY Morrisville 6 – Game Two
Keuka took the 1-0 lead quickly again as leadoff batter
Emily Cutrona reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a single by
Olivia Flynn, and scored on a wild pitch for the early lead.
Morrisville answered back with three in the bottom of the inning, but the Wolves regained the lead with three of their own in the second.
Hali Jenner led off with her first career home run. Keuka would later load the bases and two would come home on a double by
Hailey Jasinski as Keuka regained the lead.
Morrisville again answered with three in the third, but Keuka was right there with the response in the fourth. Flynn delivered a two-run double for the Green and Gold. The Wolves then got a run on a passed ball, a groundout, and an RBI single by
Emily VanDelinder to make it 9-6.
After a run in the six for the Wolves, Keuka College put the game away in the seventh. The Wolves plated six runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Hali Jenner had an RBI double and
Kaitlyn Holland followed with a two-run single. The Wolves got a pair of bases-loaded walks and added a run on a fielder's choice to make it 16-6.
Olivia Flynn entered in relief in the fourth inning and held the Mustangs off the board. She struck out five batters in 3.2 innings of work. Morrisville had a leadoff single in the seventh as they looked to attack the ten-run deficit, but she was quickly erased as the Wolves turned a double play and continued onto the 16-6 victory.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves step right back into Empire 8 Conference play this weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday at Elmira College. It has been an even series as both teams have won five games against each other since Keuka College joined the Empire 8 in 2021.
