UTICA, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Lacrosse team lost 11-8 at SUNY Poly on a rainy Saturday afternoon to begin the 2024 season.
Keuka College (0-1) got a pair of goals from
Tori Nelson and
Brooke Bonetti.
Lauren Vitello made seven saves in goal for the Wolves.
SUNY Poly 11 vs. Keuka College 8
The Wildcats won the opening draw and took the lead 39 seconds into the game, but the Wolves had a strong response.
Tori Nelson scored the first goal of the season for the Green and Gold to tie the game. Minutes later,
Julia Bauder caused a turnover and she passed it to
Brooke Bonetti for the goal and a 2-1 lead.
Grace Morse continued the run with a goal as Keuka led 3-1 after the first.
Tori Nelson scored her second as the run stretched to four goals in a row for the Wolves. The scoreless drought stretched to 20 minutes for the Wildcats, but SUNY Poly did score with 9 minutes left before halftime. The hosts won the ensuing draw and scored again and then followed the same script to tie the game at 4-4. Keuka looked to take advantage of some cards against SUNY Poly down the stretch of the half.
Katie Deatherage gave the Wolves the lead back and
Julia Bauder followed with a goal to make it 6-4. However, SUNY Poly scored with 0.3 seconds left in the half. Keuka led 6-5 at the break.
The goal at the buzzer sparked momentum for SUNY Poly. The Wildcats scored a pair of goals 21 seconds apart to tie the game and take the lead in the third quarter. The lead extended out to 9-6 for the Wildcats until
Brooke Bonetti scored for the Wolves.
Maddie Fassinger cut the margin to one, but SUNY Poly got one back before the end to take a two-goal lead, 10-8, into the final quarter.
The defense reigned for SUNY Poly in the fourth quarter. The hosts held the Wolves off the board and added an insurance goal as the Wildcats defeated the Wolves 11-8 on Saturday.

- Keuka College falls to 8-3 all-time against SUNY Poly. Two of the three losses for the Wolves in the series have come on the road against the Wildcats
- Brooke Bonetti finished with four points, scoring two goals and adding two assists
- Keuka College had the advantage in shots 29-25 on Saturday, but the goalie for SUNY Poly made 18 saves in the game
- The Wolves did a good job pressuring the clear of SUNY Poly. The Wildcats had 10 failed clears in the game
- This was a season-opening, non-conference game this season, but will be a conference game next year as SUNY Poly will be joining the Empire 8 Conference
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves remain on the road on Wednesday as they travel to Greenville, Pa. to face Thiel College. It will be the first-ever meeting between the Wolves and the Tomcats in women's lacrosse.
