Men’s Soccer Plays Russell Sage to a 2-2 Draw

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Men's Soccer team played Russell Sage College to a 2-2 draw under the lights on Wednesday at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Connor Thorpe and Isaac Smith each scored their first of the season for Keuka College (1-7-2, 0-3-2 Empire 8). Carson Smith made six stops for the Green and Gold including a pair of diving saves to preserve the draw.

Each team had a chance early in the first half, but the attempts were mainly limited to long shots early on. The Wolves had a chance midway through the frame as substitute Isaac Smith raced down the right side. He found fellow sub Griffin Herron making a near-post run but the shot was just wide of frame. Russell Sage pulled ahead minutes later. After the ball pinged around following a free kick, it was eventually headed across the goal to the back post and in for the 1-0 lead. Keuka College was not deterred. All night they pressured the Gator defense and forced multiple miscues. That happened in the 41st minute as Connor Thorpe intercepted the ball in the middle of the box and found the back of the net for the goal. Just 45 seconds later, the Wolves again caused havoc on the Sage defense. This time, it was Isaac Smith who intercepted the ball. The first-year player ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the left side of the goal to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead at the half.

Russell Sage came out with pressure against the Wolves in the second half as they looked to tie the game. The Wolves withstood the attack until the 79th minute when a jersey pull in the box resulted in a penalty kick for Russell Sage. The Gators converted to tie the game. Keuka had a chance to respond minutes following the goal, but their shot went wide. It was their best scoring chance in the closing minutes. The rest was up to Carson Smith in goal. He made a pair of diving saves in the final ten minutes to preserve the 2-2 draw for the Wolves.
