Late Goal Downs Wolves Against Highlanders

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Soccer team tied the game with 17 minutes left to play, but Houghton University answered with a game-winning goal six minutes later as the Highlanders defeated the Wolves 2-1 in an Empire 8 game at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Lindsey Garbacz scored off of a free kick for Keuka College (2-5-4, 0-2-2 Empire 8). Sam Pelcher made five saves in goal for the Wolves.

Houghton University 2 at Keuka College 1
Houghton University had possession early but the Keuka College defense did a good job limiting their chances. The Highlanders broke through in the 19th minute as a clearing ball was hit off of a player and spun to the open field behind the Keuka defense. Houghton ran onto the ball and was left one-on-one with Pelcher. The ball curled inside the far post for the 1-0 lead. The Keuka College battled back and ended up having the bulk of possession in the half. However, the Wolves struggled to connect the final pass. Keuka's lone shot in the frame was off a free kick and the 35-yard attempt was saved. Houghton led 1-0 at the half.

The Green and Gold increased the pressure in the second half but were still searching to connect with the final pass behind the Highlanders' back line. Keuka College began to develop offense through free kicks. Following a yellow card, Parker Lahey let a shot go on a free kick, but it was saved by the Highlander keeper. Minutes later, another free kick was awarded to Keuka College. Lindsey Garbacz lined up the shot about 30 yards to goal. She struck the ball for the back post. It would go over the keeper and in to tie the game at 1-1 with 17:27 left to play. Houghton flipped to the attack and six minutes later, Pelcher made a charging save, the ball popped into the air, and another Houghton attacker was there to head the ball over the Keuka defense on the goal line and in for the 2-1 lead. The Wolves tried to mount a comeback but were unable to generate a shot in the final 11 minutes as Keuka College would fall to Houghton on Wednesday.
