Box Score Juniors Vinney Zambito (Elba, N.Y./Batavia Notre Dame) and Casey Williams (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) each hit a pair of free throws late to spark the Keuka College men's basketball team to a 73-69 win over Cazenovia College Wednesday night inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
With the win, Keuka clinched a berth in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason tournament. It is the Green and Gold's first trip to postseason play since the 2009-10 season.
The Wolfpack trailed 69-68 after Ryan Gavin hit a pair of free throws with 1:08 remaining. Zambito hit a pair to put the Wolfpack (13-8, 10-5 NEAC) up 70-69. Following a turnover, Williams made a pair of free throws for a 72-69 lead.
Keuka forced a Cazenovia turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, and senior Adam Starks (Wellsville, N.Y./Andover) hit a free throw to clinch the win for the Wolfpack.
Zambito finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists and was 8 of 9 at the free throw line, while senior Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) scored 21 points with five rebounds in the win.
Starks finished with nine points, Williams had nine points with three rebounds, and senior Jared Wagner (Pittsford, N.Y./McQuaid) scored 9 points with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals to spark the Wolfpack.
With two conference games remaining, Keuka sits in second place in the NEAC North, one games behind SUNY Cobleskill (13-10, 11-4). The top three teams from each division advance into the NEAC postseason tournament, Feb. 28-March 1.
Keuka holds a one-game lead over SUNY Polytechnic (10-13, 9-6) in the NEAC North.
The Wolfpack close out the regular-season with road games against SUNY Poly (8 p.m. Friday) and SUNY Cobleskill (3 p.m. Saturday).
Cazenovia led 60-57 late in regulation, but Starks hit a free throw and Zambito and Healey each made two free throws to knot the score at 62 with 5:07 remaining.
Senior Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, N.Y./Red Jacket) executed a drop-step and made the layup for a 64-62 lead, but Cazenovia (11-13, 9-7) made four straight free throws for a 66-64 lead.
Healey evened the score when he backed down his defender and made a layup with three minutes remaining, but Brad LeFevre (11 points) hit a free throw for a 67-66 Wildcat lead.
After Hixson came away with a steal, Healey backed down his defender and banked in a jumper for a 68-67 lead.
Gavin hit a pair of free throws for a 69-68 Cazenovia lead, setting up Zambito and Williams for their late-game heroics.
Keuka shot 54.3 percent from the floor (25 of 46) while holding Cazenovia to 41.7 percent shooting (20 of 48).
In a back-and-forth first half, Cazenovia closed within 21-19 halfway through the first, but Keuka went on an 11-0 run, capped by a layup from Cliff Stevens (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) with 6:15 remaining.
The Wolfpack led by as many as 13 points in the first half and took its largest lead, 32-19 with 6:15 remaining in the half.
Zambito hit a free throw, Healey made a layup, Zambito converted a three-point play, and Williams buried a '3' before Stevens' layup gave the Wolfpack a 32-19 lead.
Then it was Cazenovia's turn to go on a run. Daniel Cunningham hit a triple to spark the Wildcats on a 15-2 run to close out the half. Cazenovia took a 37-34 lead into the break.
Keuka shot 52.4 percent in scoring 39 second-half points.
