Box Score For the second straight game, four student-athletes scored in double-figures to spark the Keuka College men's basketball team to a 68-62 win over Wells College Wednesday night inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Senior Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) posted his sixth double-double with 14 points (all in the second half) to go with 12 rebounds and 3 steals, while classmate Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, N.Y./Red Jacket) added 12 points on 62.5 percent shooting (5 of 8) to lift the Wolfpack (9-6, 6-3 NEAC).
Junior Casey Williams (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) added 15 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists, and senior Jared Wagner (Pittsford, N.Y./McQuaid) had 11 points as the Green and Gold scored a season-high 42 points in the second half.
Senior Adam Starks (Wellsville, N.Y./Andover) added 8 points with 3 rebounds and 2 assists, and Starks shot 83.3 percent (5 of 6) on free throws. Williams shot 85.7 percent (6 of 7) and Healey shot 76.9 percent (10 of 13) as Keuka set season-highs in free throw makes (32) and attempts (44).
Healey has now scored in double-figures in 13 of 14 games as the Wolfpack improved to 4-0 in games decided by six points or less.
"This year we're better and we have more returners who are used to playing in these close games," said Healey, a two-time All-NEAC forward.
"We're more comfortable playing in a close game and it shows in how we've played these past couple of close games. The biggest difference is just our leadership. Going forward, this is a good win for us because it was a close game, and we know we can be comfortable playing in tough situations. This will help us against better teams."
In a back-and-forth second half, Wells (4-14, 4-6) and Keuka were tied at 45 after Christopher Dean hit a pair of free throws with 7:38 remaining.
Starks and Healey each hit two free throws, and freshman Cliff Stevens (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) made a layup as Keuka clung to a 51-45 lead with 5:44 remaining.
Healey and Starks each buried a pair of free throws to put the Wolfpack ahead 55-49 with 3:58 left, and Wagner hit a pair of free throws for a 57-51 lead with 3:27 remaining.
But E.Z. Garcia (18 points) hit two free throws and knocked down a triple to trim the lead to 58-56 with 2:31 remaining.
Williams then drove to the basket, was fouled and converted the three-point play for a 61-56 lead, and the edge grew to 63-57 after Williams made a pair of free throws with 2:11 left.
Garcia countered by hitting two free throws, and he hit a layup and the ensuing free throw to pull the Express within 63-62 with 58 seconds remaining.
But Healey hit three free throws and Wagner and Hixson each added a free throw down the stretch to clinch the win for the Green and Gold, who moved into second place in the NEAC North standings. The top three schools in each of the divisions qualify for the annual NEAC postseason tournament, which runs Feb. 28 through March 1.
Hixson scored nine points and Healey snared seven rebounds in the first half as Keuka took a 26-25 lead into halftime after shooting 50 percent from the floor (7 of 14).
The Wolfpack continued to shoot well in the second half, again connecting on 50 percent of their shots (9 of 18).
"In the first half, our offense was predicated on what they were doing on defense, and in the second half our offense forced them to change their defense," Healey said. "That was key for us. Hixson played very well in the first half and I played very well in the second, so you can't stop both of us. One of us is going to go off."
The Wolfpack host NEAC rival Morrisville State, the three-time defending NEAC champions at 3 p.m. Saturday. Keuka handed Morrisville a 59-58 setback Jan. 14.
