Seniors Spark Women's Hoops Past Abington

Seniors Casey Chamberlain (Perry, NY/Perry), Taylor Szwec (Candor, NY/Candor) and Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) combined for 37 points as the Keuka College women's basketball team picked up its fourth straight conference win, beating Penn State-Abington 63-51 Saturday afternoon inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.

Chamberlain scored 14 points while shooting 44.4 percent (4 of 9) and added 4 rebounds and 3 blocks, Szwec had 12 points on 80 percent shooting (4 of 5) with four rebounds and Bandrowski added 11 points on 50 percent shooting (5 of 10) with 7 assists and 4 rebounds to power the Storm (10-5, 9-1 NEAC).

Junior Brittany Hadley (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) scored seven first-half points and senior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) scored all six of her points in the opening half while Bandrowski scored nine second-half points for the Green and Gold.

Senior Brittany Sinnott (Mt. Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) snared a career-high nine rebounds, all on the defensive glass, for Keuka, which forced Abington (4-12, 2-8) into 21 turnovers and 33.9 percent shooting from the field (20 of 59).

In a back-and-forth opening half, Abington led 23-19 on a '3' from Stephanie Keyes (16 points, eight rebounds) with 7:38 remaining in the first.

Hadley jump-started the Storm by converting a three-point play and also made a layup while Szwec knocked down a layup, made a pair of free throws and buried a '3' as Keuka closed out the half on a 12-2 run to take a 31-25 lead into halftime.

Chamberlain scored Keuka's first six points of the second half and Szwec added a lay-in as the Storm led 39-27 four minutes into the second. Abington pulled within 39-31 on a layup from Teharah Worrell, but the Storm used a 17-6 run to pull away for good.

Bandrowski scored nine straight points, Szwec and freshmen Katie Stuart (Tupper Lake, NY/Tupper Lake) and Chinyere Ukwu (Roosevelt, NY/St. Dominic) each hit layups and junior Erica Pendrak (New Hartford, NY/New York Mills) capped the run with a layup with 4:11 remaining that put Keuka ahead 56-37.

The Green and Gold hit the road for a big NEAC contest at SUNYIT Wednesday night at 7 p.m. SUNYIT (12-5, 8-1) sits half a game up on the Storm for first-place in the NEAC North division. The top three schools in each division qualify for the annual NEAC postseason tournament, which runs Feb. 25 to March 2.
