Men's Soccer Improves to 2-0

Box Score

Keuka College improved to 4-0 all-time in the Lakefront Classic men's soccer tournament thanks to a convincing 4-0 win over D'Youville College Saturday evening at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Freshman Leandro Curran (New York, NY/Westlake) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career off well-placed feeds from sophomore Matt Hey (Rushville, NY/Marcus Whitman) and the Storm scored an own goal early in the first half to improve to 2-0 in 2013.

Keuka's defense, led by senior Nate Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton), sophomore Richie Weit (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili), freshmen Zach Briggs (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and Ben Geloso (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) clamped down and did not allow D'Youville to record a quality shot on goal.

The Storm enjoyed a 25-2 edge in shots and controlled possession for nearly all of the second half.

In the fourth minute, Hey did a flip throw-in from the near sideline, and his throw towards the box struck off a D'Youville player and into the near corner for a 1-0 Keuka lead in the fourth minute.

Less than three minutes later, Hey helped set up the Storm's second goal. Hey slotted a through ball to Curran inside the box, and after Curran took one dribble, he chipped a 14-yard shot high over the keeper's head for a 2-0 lead in the seventh minute.

Keuka took a two-goal lead into halftime before Hey set up the Storm's third goal early in the second.

Hey executed a flip throw-in from the near sideline that sailed through the air towards Curran. Curran left his feet and sent a header from six yards out into the near corner of the goal in the 49th minute to put the Green and Gold up 3-0.

The Storm had a golden chance to seize a four-goal lead when sophomore Ben Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton) was taken down inside the box. He received a penalty kick but the keeper stopped the shot. Curran collected the rebound, but his effort glanced off the bar and the score remained 3-0.

In the 77th minute, Keuka once again received a penalty kick as freshman Paulin Kolodja (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) was taken down inside the box. This time Koldodja converted, firing a shot behind the keeper and into the center-right portion of the goal.

Sophomore Preston Vick (Kendall, NY/Kendall) started and made one save in the first half. Freshman Willie Romero (Jersey City, NY/Hoboken) came on in the second half and did not allow a goal.

Up next: Keuka has back-to-back home games, with the Storm welcoming rival SUNYIT to campus for a 1 p.m. clash on Saturday, Sept. 7 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener before hosting Alfred State for a non-conference clash on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
