Men's Hoops Can't Rally Past Abington

Box Score

Sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) scored 18 points with 8 rebounds and classmate Adam Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) added a career-high 14 points, but Keuka College's men's basketball team suffered a 67-63 home loss to Penn State-Abington Sunday afternoon inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.

Starks was 5-for-6 from the floor and connected on both of his three-point attempts while adding six rebounds, and senior Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, but the Storm (9-11, 7-5) dropped their second straight North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

Freshman Casey Williams (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) added eight points and six rebounds while sophomore Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) had seven points and four rebounds for the Green and Gold.

Wagner, the NEAC's leading three-point shooter at 50 percent (43-for-86) connected on 2 of 3 from three-point range, but the Storm shot just 5-for-16 on '3s.'

Senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) had six points and four rebounds and remains five points shy of becoming just the 10th student-athlete in program history with 1,000 career points.

Trailing 19-12 eight minutes in, Williams and Boyer each had lay-ins and Starks hit a jumper and a '3' to give the Green and Gold a 21-19 lead.

Following a 5-0 spurt from Abington (9-12, 7-3 NEAC), Boyer had a lay-in to pull the Storm within 24-23, but the Nittany Lions went on a 7-0 run and led 31-23 with 3:57 left in the opening half.

The Storm trailed 41-35 heading into halftime despite shooting 45.2 percent (14-for-31) in the half.

Keuka chipped away at the lead, and after Wagner swished a '3' from the right side, Williams snared an offensive rebound and converted the putback for a 49-48 lead with 11 minutes remaining.

In a back-and-forth contest, the lead changed hands eight times over the next four minutes, but after Tuggles swished his only '3' of the game, the Green and Gold had a 58-56 lead with 7:20 left.

Mike Colacci answered with a '3' to put Abington up 59-58, but Healey had a layup and Starks drained a '3' from the wing for a 63-62 lead with five minutes left.

Those would be the last points of the game for Keuka, which missed its last five shots. Abington took a 65-63 lead on a '3' from Kyle Battell, and made two free throws down the stretch to win its fifth straight NEAC game.

Keuka lost despite limiting Abington to just 29 percent shooting in the second half (9-for-31).

The Storm return home for an 8 p.m. Senior Night contest against Cazenovia on Wednesday night.
