Smith Scores Twice, Defense Pitches Shutout

Box Score

Senior Nate Smith (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored twice, his second consecutive game with multiple goals, to spark the Keuka College men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Lancaster Bible College Friday night at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Smith has now scored seven goals with four assists (18 points) for the Storm (6-2, 4-2 North Eastern Athletic Conference), and currently leads the NEAC in goals, assists and points. After his back-to-back two-goal games, Smith has moved into a tie for 10th all-time on Keuka's scoring list with 22 goals and 54 points.

The contest was a rematch of the 2011 NEAC quarterfinals, during which Lancaster Bible emerged with a 2-0 win over the Storm in Keuka Park.

On Friday night, Smith made sure the outcome would favor the Storm. In the 13th minute, Smith dribbled his way past two defenders, came back towards the goal and scored into the near post for a 1-0 lead.

Neither team was able to score over the next 20 minutes, until sophomore Austin Gerber (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) found Smith for his second goal of the contest. Gerber played a cross from the left corner of the field into Smith, who was standing six yards out near the center of the goal.

Smith quickly corralled the ball and sent a one-time shot high over Lancaster Bible goalie Tim Landis Jr. for a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute.

The Chargers (1-5-2, 0-2-2 NEAC) threatened in the second half, but each time Lancaster mounted an attack, the Storm defense was there to turn away a scoring opportunity.

Freshman Preston Vick (Kendall, NY/Kendall) made eight saves to earn his third shutout of the season, a figure that also leads all NEAC goalies.

In the 74th minute, Bradley Wilcox fired a shot to the near post that Vick saved, and 10 minutes later, Kevin Forsyth launched a shot from in close that Vick again stopped to maintain the shutout.

The Storm returns to action with a 6:30 p.m. home game Tuesday night against NEAC rival Cazenovia College, the second of six straight home games for the Green and Gold.
