Box Score Sophomore Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) scored 12 points, and six different members of the Keuka College men's basketball team scored at least six points during the Storm's home opener against RIT Tuesday night.
But the visiting Tigers (1-0) closed the game on an 11-3 run and defeated Keuka (0-3) 71-57 inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Wagner scored six points in each half while sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) added 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists for Keuka, which had a 27-24 halftime lead.
Senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) added 9 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds while classmate Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals for the Storm.
Tuggles and Healey each hit second-half layups to pull Keuka within 60-54, but the Storm were called for a technical foul and RIT made nine of its last 12 free throws to win its season opener.
Boyer made a layup and sophomore Brandon Franklin (DeWitt, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) buried a '3' as the Storm took an early 5-0 lead. RIT rallied and led 15-14 before Wagner buried one of his two first-half three-pointers to give Keuka a 17-15 lead with 6:26 remaining in the half.
Wagner hit another '3' to key a 10-3 spurt before the half. Healey added five points and sophomore Joe Tortolon (Dundee, NY/Dundee) made a jumper during the run.
RIT came out firing to start the second and used a 16-4 run to seize a 40-31 lead five minutes into the second and led by as many as 10 before Tuggles and Healey made it a six-point game with 3:49 remaining, but the Storm couldn't complete the comeback.
Jameel Balenton scored 12 points while Eric Seaberry and Michael D'Amico each added 10 points for RIT, which shot 25-for-50 (50 percent) for the game, including 17-for-25 (68 percent) in the second half.
The Green and Gold return home to play Hilbert College at 8 p.m. Monday night, Nov. 26.
