Box Score Senior Nate Smith (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored two goals while freshman Preston Vick (Kendall, NY/Kendall) earned his league-leading fourth shutout as the Keuka College men's soccer team blanked SUNY Cobleskill 5-0 Saturday afternoon in a match filled with yellow and red cards.
Senior Jose Cervantes (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) added his first collegiate goal while sophomore David Caramella (Oswego, NY/Oswego) added his first goal of the season, as Keuka outshot the Fighting Tigers 35-3, including 23-1 in the second half.
Smith upped his North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) leading goal total to nine, scoring two second-half goals — including one on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute — to lead Keuka (7-3, 5-3 NEAC).
Sophomore Austin Gerber (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) staked the Green and Gold to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Senior John Mastrella (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) played a cross from 30 yards out to Gerber, who bent his 16-yard shot into the far post for his fifth score of the year.
The score remained 1-0 into halftime, but that's when the cards started flying for both teams. After a yellow card was called on Cobleskill (3-9-1, 2-5 NEAC) in the goal area, Smith was awarded a penalty kick and banged home his shot to the far post for a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
Off a nifty touch pass from freshman Ben Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton), Smith extended the lead to 3-0 less than three minutes later on a one-time shot in front of the goal.
Cobleskill's players drew three yellow cards during a span of less than three minutes, then drew three red cards over the next 22 minutes as the Storm played with a considerable advantage on the field. Cobleskill drew red cards on two separate occasions just 35 seconds apart, giving Keuka a two-man advantage over the final 33 minutes and a three-man edge for the final 12 minutes.
Caramella pushed the lead to 4-0 on a blast from 12 yards out that sailed into the far portion of the goal, and Cervantes finished the scoring off an assist from freshman Jake Altman (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) with 8:37 remaining.
Vick made two saves to improve to 7-3 and earn his fourth shutout, all in the last seven games.
There were a total of 15 fouls called: 10 on Cobleskill and five on Keuka.
The Storm returns to action with a 7 p.m. home game Wednesday night against Alfred University, the fourth of six straight home games for the Green and Gold.
