Men's Soccer Blanks Cobleskill

Box Score

Junior forward John Mastrella (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) scored two goals while classmate Nate Smith (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added a goal and an assist as Keuka College's men's soccer team traveled to SUNY Cobleskill and emerged with a convincing 4-0 win over the Tigers Saturday afternoon.

Needing wins and points to keep pace in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), Mastrella staked the Storm (6-3-1, 3-3 NEAC) to an early 1-0 lead. Mastrella, who posted his third two-goal game in the last five contests, put Keuka on the board in the fifth minute. Smith found Mastrella in the open field, and Mastrella strolled in on a breakaway and finished for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the 28th minute, when sophomore Nate Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton) fed Mastrella with a through ball. Mastrella got into open field and scored his second goal of the game, and team-leading eighth goal of 2011, for a 2-0 lead.

Neither team would score during the remainder of the first half, and the score remained 2-0 through the first 19 minutes of the second half until junior Ron Burd (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) blasted a shot from 20 yards out in the 65th minute that sailed into the back of the net for a three-goal edge. Smith finished the scoring in the 74th minute, converting his sixth goal off a scramble from the top of the box.

Junior Derek Condon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) made eight saves for his first shutout. Keuka outshot Cobleskill (3-9, 2-4 NEAC) 22-12.

Keuka hosts Wells College at 5 p.m. Thursday night back at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

The top five schools qualify for the annual NEAC championships, which run Nov. 1-6. Keuka and Wells (6-6, 3-3 NEAC) are both currently tied for fifth place, half a game behind Lancaster Bible College (4-8-1, 3-2-1) for the final playoff spot with five NEAC games remaining.
