Late Goal Spoils Keuka College's Senior Day Rally

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Field Hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit with a pair of third-quarter goals to pull even, but a fourth-quarter goal proved to be the difference as the Wolves fell 4-3 in conference play on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. Keuka College battled back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to tie the game entering the final quarter before the visitors found the game-winner early in the fourth.

Seniors Ashley Pospiech, Cassidy Scheftic, and Emma Mantione each scored for Keuka College. Junior goalkeeper Khadeeja Reed finished with eight saves as the Wolves continued to battle until the final whistle.

Keuka College earned the first penalty corner of the afternoon just over two minutes into the game. Following the insert, Brianna Broadwell fired a shot that was stopped by a defensive save, denying the Wolves an early lead. The visitors answered with sustained pressure midway through the opening quarter. Reed made three saves during a flurry of penalty corners before two goals gave Elmira a 2-0 advantage after 15 minutes.

The Wolves responded early in the second quarter. Emma Mantione had her shot denied by a defensive save, but Ashley Pospiech collected the rebound and finished into the cage to cut the deficit to 2-1. Just over three minutes later, the Soaring Eagles restored their two-goal lead to take a 3-1 advantage into halftime.

Keuka College came out of the halftime break with their best stretch of the afternoon. The Wolves earned a penalty corner, and back-to-back shots by Broadwell and Zoey Dettbarn forced saves before Cassidy Scheftic buried the third opportunity to make it a one-goal game. The pressure continued moments later. Another pair of penalty corners kept the attack alive as Paige Bull forced two more saves. Seconds later, Mantione broke through, finishing the equalizer at the 35:02 mark to cap a two-goal rally in just 2:19 and send the game into the fourth quarter tied at 3-3.

Keuka College nearly grabbed its first lead of the afternoon to open the fourth quarter. Mackennah Decker and Broadwell generated three shots in the opening minute, but each attempt was turned away. Elmira answered on their next scoring chance to regain the lead just over two minutes into the quarter.

The Wolves continued to push for another equalizer. Reed made four saves over the final 10 minutes to keep the deficit at one, while Scheftic added a defensive save to deny another scoring chance. In the closing moments, Keuka College earned a late penalty corner and generated three shots, but the visitors' goalkeeper made the necessary saves before the final horn sounded.
