KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Baseball team played their first home game of the season on Kuhl Field on Monday, but the Wolves fell to SUNY Poly 7-5 in an Empire 8 Conference game.
Evan Cuba led Keuka College (11-18, 7-11 Empire 8) at the plate with three hits and a pair of RBIs.
Juan Gonzalez also had a multi-hit game with a pair of singles on Monday.
SUNY Poly 7 at Keuka College 5
SUNY Poly opened the third inning with three straight hits to take a 1-0 lead over Keuka College. Starting pitcher
Hunter Corkran settled in to retire the next three batters, striking out the last, to leave a pair on base and the score at 1-0.
The Wildcats increased their lead with a run in the fourth, but the Wolves answered back with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Michael Brown led off with a single.
Juan Gonzalez looked to bunt him over but perfectly placed it between the pitcher and third baseman for a single. After a sacrifice bunt from
Alex Evans,
Ian Ruhmel followed with a sacrifice fly to score Brown and cut the SUNY Poly lead to one.
An inning later, back-to-back walks followed an
Evan Cuba double as the Wolves loaded the bases with one out.
Michael Brown hit a groundball but beat it out at first before the Wildcats could turn two, allowing Cuba to score and tie the game.
Juan Gonzalez then followed with another perfectly placed infield single in near the same spot as the Wolves took a 3-2 lead.
A sacrifice fly and a safety squeeze gave the lead back to the Wildcats in the top of the seventh, but the Wolves responded right back in the bottom of the inning. A two-run single by
Evan Cuba gave Keuka a 5-4 advantage.
SUNY Poly got the big hit in the eighth inning as the Wildcats hit a two-run home run to take the lead right back.
Keuka got a leadoff runner in the bottom of the inning on base, but he would be erased on the basepaths, and the Wolves trailed by one going into the final inning.
SUNY Poly got an insurance run in the top of the inning, but it was not needed, as the Wolves went down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves remain at home with a midweek game against Elmira College. Keuka College topped the Soaring Eagles in Elmira earlier this season in extra innings.
