Wolves Fall in Four to Nazareth

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Volleyball team lost at home on Friday night 3-1 to Nazareth University in an Empire 8 Conference match.

Senior Nina Scott led Keuka College (10-13, 3-5 Empire 8) with 16 kills in her final home match. Alessandra Castañeda was right behind her with 15 kills and led the Wolves with 14 digs in the loss.

Nazareth University 3 at Keuka College 1 – 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19
Keuka College scored five unanswered, including a pair of Nina Scott aces, to take an early 9-4 lead over Nazareth in the first set. The Golden Flyers rebounded and responded with eight straight to take the lead back over the Wolves. Lilah Cousins hit a kill for the Green and Gold to stop the run. The set would go back and forth with nine ties and six lead changes, but a Keuka service error followed by a Nazareth ace closed the set for the visitors 25-21.

It was a similar story in the second set as four straight for the Wolves gave Keuka a 12-4 lead in the frame. Again, during that run, Nina Scott hit a pair of aces. The Wolves limited the Nazareth response run to just five and worked throughout the set to keep distance between them and the Golden Flyers. Nazareth would draw the set closer late, but a Golden Flyer error ended the second 25-22, leveling the match.

The Golden Flyers opened the third on the front foot, leading Keuka 11-6. The Wolves responded with five straight to tie the set at 11-11. In total, the fourth set would be tied eight times, but the Wolves were never able to nudge ahead. Back-to-back kills by Castañeda tied the set at 21-21. After a Keuka service error, Gianna Falleti put one to the floor to make it 22-22. However, Nazareth would have a block and two kills to win three of the final four points to take the third set 25-23.

Nazareth took the momentum into the fourth set, but the Wolves battled tough. A kill by first-year Anna Beck tied the set at 15-15, but a block swung the set back to the Golden Flyers. It started four unanswered as Nazareth took a 19-15 lead over the Wolves. The Wolves would trim the margin to two but not get it any closer as Nazareth took the fourth to win the match in four sets.

KC Notes:
  • The Wolves fall to 12-40 all-time against Nazareth University
  • Most statistics were basically even between the two teams. Nazareth had three more kills, but the Wolves made up for that with three more aces. There were only three more digs for the Golden Flyers. The difference, however, was felt at the net as the Golden Flyers had 10 blocks to just three from the Wolves
  • Nina Scott moved from a tie for eighth on the career kills list at Keuka College to sole possession of seventh. The senior now has 856 in her career
  • With her double-double, Alessandra Castañeda set new single-season highs with 212 kills and 264 digs in her second season
  • Gabby Rodriguez had 11 digs for the Wolves. The libero surpassed 400 digs for the season and set a new career-high at 408
  • Phoebe Swartz led the Wolves with 20 assists in the match. The sophomore has surpassed 400 assists for her career
  • It was also the final home match for senior Lilly Devine, who finished with six digs in the match
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves are right back in action tomorrow with a tough test. Keuka College will play at conference-leading St. John Fisher University on Saturday afternoon.
