KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — Keuka College Women's Volleyball closed out the Keuka College Invitational on Saturday with two losses. The Wolves fell to Thiel College 3-1 in the first game and to Hilbert College 3-0 in the second.
Dayna Edholm led the way, combining for 27 kills in the two matches on Saturday. First-year setter
Summer Elza (Goodyear, Ariz. / The Odyssey Institute of Advanced and International Studies) had 25 assists on the day, while
Casey Hunziker contributed to the offense with 23 assists.
Thiel College 3 vs. Keuka College 1 – 25-19, 9-25, 12-25, 14-25
The first point of the day went to the Wolves with a kill from Edholm on a Hunziker set.
Sydney Haust followed it up with an ace to get the early 2-0 lead. With Keuka up 7-3, the Wolves strung together six points in a row which included two aces from first-year libero
Gabby Rodriguez to go up 13-3. The Tomcats found their footing at this point, fighting back to a 17-17 tie game. However, Keuka was on the right side of a 6-1 run which included another Rodriguez service ace. A
Gabby Fenton kill would put a lid on the set for the Wolves to win it 25-19.
The Tomcats were able to capitalize on Keuka's errors in the second set, getting out to an early 11-4 lead. From there, the Wolves would only score five additional points in the set to lose the second 25-9.
After falling to a 7-3 deficit in the third set, the Wolves fought back to a 7-7 tie with the help of both outsides Edholm and Fenton. Thiel went on a 12-2 run that ended with a service error. Edholm would put the ball away once more in the third in the 25-12 loss.
The fourth set followed the theme of the previous two, with large runs from the Tomcat offense.
Nina Scott contributed to the Keuka score with a pair of kills. Ultimately, the Wolves fell 25-14 in the fourth set to lose the match 3-1.
Hilbert College 3 vs. Keuka College 0 – 18-25, 22-25, 17-25
With the first set tied at 3-3, Hunziker gave Keuka the lead with a service ace. The Hawks answered with back-to-back points but
Nina Scott had a response with a kill from the right side. The game continued with the back-and-forth pattern until Hilbert went on an 8-2 run to put the set away at 25-18 in Hilbert's favor.
The second set opened with an Edholm kill, followed by an ace from Elza. After a quick response from Hilbert, the Wolves scored the next four points. Three of the four points came from Edholm, consisting of a kill and two aces. With the game tied at nine, the Green and Gold went on an 8-2 run to bring the game to 17-10 Keuka. Hilbert responded with three points, but Hunziker responded with a setter dump for a kill and backed it up with an ace. However, the Hawks went on a 12-2 run to win the second set 25-22.
The Hawks continued their offensive success in the third set which proved to be too much for the Keuka defense. Hilbert would win the final set of the tournament 25-17. Keuka College fell in the last game of the Invitational 3-0.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Green and Gold will look for their first road wins as they travel to Delhi, New York to compete in the SUNY Delhi Tri-Match on Saturday, September 7. The tri-match will consist of Keuka College, SUNY Delhi, and Alfred State College.
