UTICA, N.Y. — The Keuka College Baseball team was swept in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Keuka College (8-27, 5-12 Empire 8) led early but lost 3-2 in game one. The Wolves then attempted a comeback in game two, scoring four in the eighth, but fell 8-7 to complete the sweep.
Lucas Gilbert took the tough-luck loss on the mound in game one. The first-year allowed three runs and just three hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked only one.
Keuka took the early lead as
Tyler Lewandowski sent the first pitch of the game down the left-field line for a double. He scored on a
Carlos Fantauzzi single. The Wolves added a run in the third to complete their scoring.
Utica tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning and then took the lead on a solo home run in the sixth. The Wolves were unable to answer, going down in order in the seventh.
Keuka College looked to bounce back in game two. The straight singles by
Alex Evans, Fantauzzi, and
RJ Murphy loaded the bases. The Green and Gold then got runs on a bases-loaded walk, followed by a wild pitch.
Utica tied the game in the bottom of the inning, took the lead in the third, and extended it to 7-2 in the fourth.
The Wolves got one back in the sixth on an RBI single by
Alex Evans, however, the Pioneers matched that with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
Keuka loaded the bases in the eighth with one out.
RJ Murphy scored two with a single and
Donald Nemeth followed with an RBI single.
Matt Vaccaro added a run on a sacrifice fly as the wolves cut the margin to one, 8-7.
The Wolves put the tying run on base in the ninth, but a double-play ended the game as Keuka College lost 8-7.
The Wolves and Pioneers complete their conference series on Sunday with a single, nine-inning game.
