KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — Keuka College Softball won two games on Sunday afternoon against Nazareth University. Both games went into extra innings and resulted in Keuka walk-off hits for each win. The Wolves won game one 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, and game two 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
Keuka College (13-18, 6-8 Empire 8) had ten different players record hits in the doubleheader. Second baseman
Payge Granger (Camden N.Y. / Camden) hit the walk-off hit in the first game and first-year
Haley Mascho (Bolivar, N.Y. / Bolivar-Richburg) hit the walk-off in game two.
Keuka College 7 – Nazareth University 6 (9 innings)
Lead-off hitter
Emily Cutrona (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca West) drew a walk and proceeded to steal second to get things started for Keuka. Right after that,
Olivia Flynn (Williamson, N.Y. / Williamson) hit a double to right field to bring Cutrona home. Flynn was also brought home for another Keuka run, and that came from
Grace Eagen (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca West) hitting a single to center field. The game went into the second with the Wolves up 2-0.
While Keuka held the Golden Flyers off the board in the second inning, Nazareth would tie the game in the top of the third. Nazareth added two runs in the top of the fourth to go up 4-2. The Wolves tightened their defense across the next two innings, only facing seven batters to get the six outs.
Trailing by two, the Wolves found their offensive stride in the top of the sixth.
Grace Eagen got the party started with a single and
Emily VanDelinder (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) drew a walk to give the Wolves two baserunners.
Lauren Gilbert (Owego, N.Y. / Owego Free Academy) came in to pinch hit and capitalized on the opportunity with a single to center field which brought Eagen home. After a groundout that moved the runners to second and third, a second groundout resulted in another Keuka run. Finally,
Emily Cutrona put the ball in play to bring in the final run of the inning to give the Wolves the 5-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Nazareth scored two runs to go ahead 6-5 heading into the last half inning of the game.
Makenna DeMoney (Conklin, N.Y. / Susquehanna Valley) came up strong for the Wolves with a double to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs,
Hali Jenner (Waverly, N.Y. Waverly) reached first on an error which brought DeMoney home to tie the game. The game went into extra innings tied 6-6.
A defensive battle ensued across the next two innings, with pitcher
Olivia Flynn steering the ship for the Wolves. The game reached the bottom of the ninth, still tied 6-6. With two outs against Keuka,
Emily VanDelinder reached on an infield error.
Hali Jenner then singled and moved VanDelinder over to second. With the go-ahead runner on second,
Payge Granger hit a walk-off single to bring VanDelinder home, sealing the win for the Wolves 7-6.
Keuka College 4 – Nazareth University 3 (8 innings)
The Wolves were the first to strike in game two. It began with
Hailey Jasinski (Buffalo, N.Y. / North Collins) hitting a single and proceeding to steal second base.
Makenna DeMoney followed it up with a single to center field which brought Jasinski in for the first run of the game.
The next two innings went scoreless and pitcher
Hali Jenner struck out three of the six batters she faced. The Golden Flyers scored a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game but scored another in the fifth to go up 2-1. However, the Wolves were ready to respond.
The Wolves had two baserunners after drawing two walks, and
Olivia Flynn brought them both in to score with a single to center field. The Wolves were up 3-2 going into the sixth inning. While the sixth inning went without a run scored, Nazareth scored a run in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
The Keuka defense held the Golden Flyers off the board in the top of the eighth, with Jenner striking out another two batters.
Grace Eagen drew a walk to start the bottom of the inning, and advanced to second on a single from VanDelinder. With two outs,
Haley Mascho put the ball in the outfield for a walk-off single for the last run of the day. The Wolves won game two 4-3.
