Men’s Basketball Stumbles at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. — The Keuka College Men's Basketball team lost at Utica University 88-70 in an Empire 8 Conference game on Monday night.

Keuka College (9-12, 7-7 Empire 8) was led by Devin Milton with 22 points on Monday.

The Pioneers held the Wolves off the board for the first five minutes of play on Monday and built a 15-0 lead. Mac Creek got Keuka College on the board with the first basket of the game for the Wolves. The lead stayed in the teens for most of the half until Utica went on a late push. The Pioneers outscored the Wolves 14-3 over the final 6:33 of the first half. The lone basket was a three by Mason VanDeMortel. Utica led 50-23 at the half.

Utica University kept the lead in the 20s for the majority of the second half. Keuka College would increase their scoring output with small runs throughout the half, but the Pioneers maintained their advantage. A pair of threes in the final 34 seconds by Kobe Schriver brought the margin down to the teens with Utica defeating Keuka 88-70.

  • Utica University swept the season series against the Wolves. Keuka is now 7-22 all-time against the Pioneers
  • The Wolves played 17 players on Monday and 15 of them recorded at least one rebound. Amar Jackson led the way with seven in the game
  • With his team-high 22 points, Devin Milton becomes just the second player in Keuka College Men's Basketball history to score 1,500 points in a career. Milton continues his climb towards Shawn Reed '89, the program scoring leader with 1,548 points
  • Mason VanDeMortel's three in the first half was his only attempt of the game. He set a new personal best with 51 threes in a season, moving into a tie for eighth on the single-season list
  • VanDeMortel has made his last five three-point attempts
  • Keuka College had its worst free-throw shooting night of the season on Monday, going 6-17 (35%) from the line. Conversely, Utica had the best free-throw shooting of any Keuka College opponent this season going 16-18 (89%) from the line.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves close out the regular season with a pair of games at home this weekend. Keuka College will first host Elmira College on Friday night. The Green and Gold then welcome Alfred University to the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game to close the 2023-24 regular season.
