Wolves Run Past Wildcats in Home Opener

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team defeated Penn College 69-61 in their home opener at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on Tuesday night.

Five Wolves were in double figures for Keuka College (2-3). Sydney Brown led the way with 17 points and Mary Cotter finished with 15. Lillian Mullen added 13 off the bench and Brooke Burd and Caiden Crego each posted 10 in the win. Burd also led the Wolves with 12 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Keuka College 69 vs. Penn College 61
It was a slow start for both teams on Tuesday night. A layup by Caiden Crego was the only Keuka points for the opening five minutes as Penn led 7-2 early. The scoring picked up for both teams in the final minutes. A personal 5-0 run by Lillian Mullen gave the Wolves a 13-11 lead with 19 seconds remaining. The Wolves led 13-12 after one.

Mullen stayed hot for the Wolves hitting a pull-up jumper on their first possession. That began a 6-0 run as Crego followed with a pair of layups for the Wolves. Penn College shrunk it down to two points midway through the quarter, but Sydney Brown answered right back with a three for Keuka.

Back-to-back jumpers by Mary Cotter pushed the Keuka College lead to 20 early in the second half. A 7-0 run for the Wildcats ate into the lead, but Lillian Mullen hit a three to snap the run, making it 53-37. The Wolves maintained the 16-point margin and carried a 55-39 lead into the final quarter.

Penn College came out firing in the fourth quarter attempting to come back on the Wolves. They cut the lead to nine with 3:24 left, but Mary Cotter quickly answered with a jumper for Keuka. Penn answered back with four straight to make it a seven-point game, 67-60, with 2:31 left. However, Keuka did a good job possessing the ball and killing the clock. Katie Deatherage had an offensive rebound and layup for the Wolves and Penn College had a single made free throw. That accounted for all of the scoring over the final 2:31 as the Wolves held on to defeat the Wildcats 69-61.
