Volleyball Falls in Five Sets

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Volleyball team fell in a five-set thriller to Houghton University on Wednesday night in an Empire 8 Conference match. The final score was 3-2 in favor of Houghton.

Graduate student Dayna Edholm (Buffalo, N.Y. / Sweet Home) led the Wolves with an impressive 21 kills, while Nina Scott (Honeoye Falls, N.Y. / Honeoye Falls-Lima) added 18 kills of her own. Casey Hunziker (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) was pivotal in setting up the offense, finishing with 41 assists and contributing three service aces.

Houghton came out strong in the opening set, going on an early run and jumping to a 4-0 lead behind three consecutive service aces. Keuka College responded with a kill by Edholm to put themselves on the board. However, Houghton continued to apply pressure, extending their lead to 17-5. Keuka showed resilience, closing the gap to 24-19, but Houghton closed out the set with a 25-19 victory.

Keuka found their rhythm in the second set, trading points with Houghton in a tightly contested battle. The Wolves' offense came alive as kills from Edholm, Scott, and Lilah Cousins (Denver, Colo. / Westminster) helped Keuka stay in the game. A kill from Edholm gave Keuka an 18-13 lead. Houghton closed the gap to 18-18 and kept the game tight until the end, but Keuka secured the final two points to win 25-23 and tie the match.

Keuka carried the momentum into the third set, starting strong with a kill from Scott and a service ace from Jessica Throop (Grant, Mich. / Grant). The Wolves built a comfortable lead at 20-16 and never looked back, capitalizing on attack errors from Houghton to win the set 25-17.

The fourth set was another back-and-forth affair with multiple lead changes. Keuka found themselves ahead 20-18 late in the set, but Houghton rallied back to tie it at 22-22. Despite strong offensive plays from Scott, Houghton edged out Keuka, winning the set 25-23 and forcing a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, Houghton took control early, building an 8-2 lead. Keuka fought back to bring the score to 13-10, but Houghton sealed the match with a kill to win the set 15-10, taking the match 3-2.

  • Edholm's 21 kills moved her into fifth on the all-time career kills list. She also surpassed 200 kills on the season
  • Casey Hunziker's three service aces has moved her to fifth best on the all-time list with 163 in her career
  • Nina Scott's 18 kills is her career-best
Up Next for Keuka College: The Green and Gold will look to bounce back in another conference battle at Alfred University on Saturday at 1 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the two teams since Alfred beat Keuka in the conference championship in 2023.
