Men’s Soccer Finishes Season Against Utica

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Men's Soccer team played their final game of the 2024 season, falling at home to Utica University 3-1 in an Empire 8 matchup under the lights of the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Playing in his final game, senior Cory Cangemi made six saves in goal for Keuka College (0-15, 0-11). A pair of first-years linked up for the Wolves goal. Carson Montoney scored his first career goal with Patrick Mucha getting the assist.

It was a battle in the midfield for most of the early part of the game. Cangemi was called upon for one save but both teams limited opportunities well. Utica would strike first in the 17th minute to take a 1-0 lead. But the Wolves answered 41 seconds later. They drove the ball down the right wing to the end line. Mucha lofted the ball towards the near post and Montoney flicked it past the keeper and inside the right post to level the game at one. The momentum flipped in the 28th minute as a red card was shown to the Wolves, forcing Keuka College to play down a man. Possession snapped in favor of the Pioneers and they took the lead back in the 37th minute. Utica led 2-1 at the half.

The Wolves adjusted to playing a man down at the break, came out in the second, and attacked. Evan Pellerito had a shot from distance that rang off the crossbar. However, the advantage was too much. Cangemi made a nice save in the 49th minute, but Utica was there for the rebound to make it 3-1. The Wolves had another chance in the 68th minute. A free kick was awarded outside the box. Patrick Mucha stepped up to take it, already with a pair of free kick goals on the season. His effort was saved, but in the chase for the rebound, the Utica goalie dove and tripped up a Wolf, and a penalty kick was awarded. However, after a discussion with the assistant referee, it was determined that Keuka was in an offside position and the ball was turned over to the Pioneers. The Wolves fought until the end, but Keuka College closed the season with a loss, falling to Utica University 3-1.

KC Notes:
  • Despite the loss, Keuka College remains ahead in the all-time series with Utica 8-7-2
  • It was the first career goal for Montoney and first career assist for Mucha
  • With his six saves, Cory Cangemi finishes the season with 91 saves, the tenth-most in a season in program history. He upped his career total to 219, fifth-most by a Keuka College keeper
