Dewey Scores in Overtime to Win for the Wolves

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Field Hockey Team (6-12, 4-5 E8) defeated the Nazareth College Golden Flyers (4-15, 4-5 E8) 4-3 in overtime on Saturday at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Erin Patterson (Rochester, N.Y./ Gates-Chili) scored two goals in the game for the Wolves. Tori Nelson (Vernon Center, N.Y./ Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) scored a goal off a penalty stroke. Anna Dewey (Sidney, N.Y./ Sidney) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to secure the win for the Wolves.

Both teams' offenses came out strong on Saturday. Just four minutes into the game the Wolves struck first. Erin Patterson shot, but it was blocked by the Nazareth goalkeeper. She rebounded her first shot and found the back of the net putting the Wolves up 1-0. The Golden Flyers came right back eight minutes into the quarter to tie the game. Nazareth scored another less than two minutes later to end the quarter with a 2-1 lead.

The Wolves came right back early in the second quarter. Patterson scored her second of the day, this time with the assist coming from Makaela Mills (Afton, N.Y./ Afton) to tie the game 2-2. The Wolves has six penalty corners throughout the second quarter but were unable to capitalize and the score remained 2-2 heading into the half.

The defense picked up in the third quarter. Both teams managed four shots throughout the quarter, but neither team was able to score. The Wolves jumped out to a 3-2 lead after Tori Nelson found the back of the net on a penalty stroke and would hold this score for the rest of the quarter.

The Wolves held the lead for the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Nazareth battled back earning three penalty corners in the fourth. Nazareth struck to tie the game 3-3 and neither team was able to score forcing the game to go into overtime.

Just over a minute into overtime, the Golden Flyers threatened with a penalty corner, but they were unable to get a shot off. One minute after that, the Wolves would get a penalty corner of their own. Mills passed to Dewey at the top of the key and Dewey snuck it past to win the game for the Wolves.

  • Erin Patterson moves into second place overall with 10 goals this season.
  • This is the second straight game against Nazareth that has gone into overtime. Nazareth won the last overtime match-up.

  • Jordan Nichols (Deposit, N.Y./ Afton) recorded seven saves in the game.
 
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves have qualified for the Empire 8 Tournament for the first time in program history. Pairings will be determined this weekend and the first round will be played on Wednesday, November 2nd.
