Keuka College Tops Cazenovia 59-54

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team defeated Cazenovia College 59-54 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game on Saturday at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on campus.

Keuka College (6-6, 2-3 NEAC) was led by Sam Laranjo with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Riley Record added 12 points for the Wolves and Meaghan McGwin finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

It was an even start to the game as the lead changed hands five times in the opening frame. The Wolves would eventually take the lead, buoyed by a pair of threes by freshman Killian Mahoney in the first ten minutes and led 17-12.

The Wildcat scored the first four points of the second and drew the margin to one, but was unable to take the lead. Mahoney responded with a jumper and Riley Record followed that with a three to make it 22-16. Sydney Bloom drilled a jumper with 3:43 left to push the Keuka lead to ten, the largest of the game. After trading baskets, Keuka College maintained the 10-point cushion, 34-24, at the half.

Keuka College came out cold in the second half and Cazenovia took advantage. The Wolves missed their first seven shots of the quarter. At the other end of the floor, Cazenovia was finding the basket as the drained the game down to one possession, 34-32. The Wolves snapped the slide and remained ahead 46-39 going to the final quarter.

The Wolves would lead by nine early in the fourth, 53-44, but the Wildcats continued to push. An 8-0 run that spanned five minutes narrowed the margin to 53-52 and that score carried until the final minute. A layup by McGwin got the Wolves back on the board with 46 seconds left. The total Keuka drought was 7:02, but the Green and Gold never surrendered the lead. Keuka College would continue onto the 59-54 conference victory.

KC Notes:

  • In one of the school's oldest series, Keuka College is now 46-9 all-time against Cazenovia College
  • The Wolves are on a nine-game winning streak against the Wildcats and are 27-3 all-time at home
  • Arianna DeNault had three assists in the win. The senior cracked the top ten career list at Keuka with 219 in her four seasons
  • Sam Laranjo also joined a top ten list. With her four steals on Saturday, Laranjo has 186 for her career, moving to eighth on the career list
  • The win was the 29th conference victory for Head Coach Gary Broadhurst, tying her predecessor Sarah (Gaffney) Matthews for third all-time

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves remain at home this Wednesday as Keuka College welcomes the Express of Wells College to David M. Sweet Court. The Green and Gold will look to continue their strong run of play as the Wolves have swept the Express in each of the last two seasons.
