Defense Dominates in Wolves Win

BRADFORD, Pa. — The Keuka College Men's Basketball team opened their 2018-19 season with an impressive 67-47 victory on the road at Pitt.-Bradford on Saturday.

David Oliveras led Keuka College (1-0) with 14 points. Trevor Powell added 13 points while Ryder Mansfield and Sam Brown each added 10 points. Mansfield also led the Wolves with 10 rebounds for the fourth double-double of his career.

The Green and Gold opened their season on Saturday and trailed early at Bradford. However, Keuka came back to tie the game at 10-10. A three by Sam Brown put the Wolves ahead 15-10. Keuka opened a double-digit lead following a steal and jumper by Trevor Powell. The Wolves had a 32-14 lead in rebounds which led to a 12-0 advantage in second chance points in the first half. The opening period concluded as David Oliveras converted a layup and one with four seconds left, giving the Wolves led 36-17 at the half.

Keuka College's lead would eclipse 20 points early in the second half. The Wolves would score 12 unanswered midway through the second as Keuka held Pitt.-Bradford scoreless for over six minutes of play. Free throws would snap the run, but in total, Keuka College held Bradford without a field goals for nearly nine minutes in the second half. The Wolves would continue onto the 67-47 season-opening victory on Saturday.

KC Notes:

  • The win was the second straight for Keuka College against Pitt.-Bradford. Prior to those two victories, the Panthers won the previous seven meetings dating back to the 1995-96 season
  • The Wolves have won the season-opener for the second consecutive season
  • It was the fewest points ever allowed in a season opening game for Keuka College and the best margin of victory since Keuka defeated Castleton State 71-49 to start the 1996-97 season
  • 47 points allowed was the fewest since SUNY Cobleskill scored 47 in the 2014-15 season. It tied for the seventh fewest points allowed in a game in program history
  • Pitt.-Bradford scored only 17 points in the opening half. The defense for Keuka tied for the third fewest points allowed in a half in school history

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves remain on the road next weekend as the travel to Virginia to play in the Dick Leftwich Tip-off Tournament, hosted by Roanoke College. Keuka College will face the host Maroons in the opening game and then play either Emory University or the College of Staten Island.
