Keuka College Tops Houghton College in Men's Soccer

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Men's Soccer team defeated Houghton College 3-0 under the lights at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex in a non-conference game on Tuesday night.

Abdikarim Maalo scored a pair of goals for Keuka College (8-6, 5-2 NEAC). Christian Cupello added a late insurance goal and Ryan Mavretish made three saves in goal for the shutout.

The Wolves had the first good chance of the half as Jared Burns raced down the left side. Once into the box, he threw on the brakes to shake the defender. His right footed shot curved towards the far post but ended up deflecting off the post and away. Keuka College would take the lead in the 21st minute as Samba Doukhansy sent a ball into the right side of the box, finding Abdikarim Maalo. The junior took a touch then finished to the far post for the 1-0 advantage. The lead would be doubled in the first half as Maalo got his second of the game. Maalo collected the ball in the right side of the box and curved a high shot over the keeper for a 2-0 lead. Keuka College would carry that lead into halftime.

Houghton increased the pressure in a quick-moving second half. The totaled 11 shots in the period, but only one was on frame with Mavretish making the save. Keuka College put the game away in the 75th minute. Damian Rutan sent a left-footed corner kick into the box. The ball bounced around in the traffic with Seth Spurgeon knocking it back in the air. Christian Cupello was on the goal line to nod in the ball as the Wolves would continue onto the 3-0 victory.

KC Notes:

  • Keuka College improves to 1-0-1 against Houghton College since the Highlanders transitioned to NCAA Division III. The two teams did face each other in 1993 when Houghton was a member of the NAIA
  • The two goals by Maalo were the first of his career at Keuka College
  • Humberto Flores played in his 50th game for Keuka College
  • The win was the 27 of Head Coach Steve Christenson's career with the Men's Soccer program at Keuka College. He passed Tom Bonus for the second-most wins by a coach in program history

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves return to North Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend as they travel to Penn St.-Abington to face the Nittany Lions. Abington is the defending conference champions and are currently undefeated in the NEAC this season.
