The Highlanders took an early lead on Wednesday night as they got in behind the Keuka College defense to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolves defense was able to withstand the pressure for much of the first half. Sophomore goalie Ryan Mavretish made four saves in the frame for Keuka. The Wolves were able to build some attacks in the half. In the 33rd minute, Mike Celestino sent a 40 yard free kick into the six yard box, but was unable to find a head. Minutes later, Christian Cupello let a long shot go that was bobbled by the Highlander keeper, but saved. Just before halftime, Houghton College converted on a penalty kick to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

As play continued in the second, Keuka College was able to build some offensive pressure. In the 56th, Rohel Duncan sent a ball behind the defense, finding Samba Doukhansy. The freshman beat the race to the ball with the Highlander keeper, but his chip shot sailed just wide. Minutes later the Wolves had three straight corner kick opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the goal. The Wolves broke through in the 68th minute. Humberto Flores won a free ball 35 yards out on the right side. He let a long shot go for the far post. The ball went around the keeper and dipped into the goal to make it 2-1. In the final minutes of the game, Keuka College pushed the ball down the field. A cross from the right side went to the near post. It was flicked on by Joshua Card to Chris Millard on the far post. Millard finished the ball to tie the game at 2-2 with 2:11 left to play.

In the overtime periods, Keuka College had a 3-1 advantage in shots, but were unable to get any attempts on frame. Mavretish saved the one shot by Houghton College as the game would end after 110 minutes as a 2-2 draw.

KC Notes:

  • Wednesday was the first meeting between the two schools since the mid 1990s. No results of those games are in archives
  • It was the second game to go to overtime this season, with Keuka College previously losing to Fredonia in the season opener
  • Ryan Mavretish made eight saves in the game, setting a new career-high. It was also the most saves in a game by a Keuka College keeper this season

Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves have a week off before returning to North Eastern Athletic Conference action. The Green and Gold will host Penn College on October 18 at 6pm at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex. Keuka College defeated the Wildcats 4-0 in Williamsport, Pa. last season.
