Keuka College Falls Against SUNY Poly 73-69

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Keuka College Men's Basketball team lost at home on Friday night 73-69 to the SUNY Poly Wildcats.

Keuka (8-14, 5-11 NEAC) will conclude their 2015-16 season on Saturday as they host the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers at 1pm at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.

Casey Williams led Keuka with 18 points and seven rebounds. Cliff Stevens had 13 points for Keuka and three blocks. Also in double figures was Trevor Powell who finished with 10 points and a game-high five steals.

The Wildcats got out to a quick 6-0 lead on Friday night, but Keuka quickly responded with a layup by Casey Williams and three pointer by Cliff Stevens. SUNY Poly continued to work the ball to leading scored Quayshaun Mitchell and grew their lead back out. Mitchell finished with 30 in the game for the Wildcats. The Green and Gold responded once again. Williams converted an and-one play and Keuka followed that with layups by Devin Cooper and Miles Boyer as a part of a 7-0 run to take a 17-16 lead halfway through the first. The Wildcats answered back and took a seven point lead, 30-23, their largest of the half. Keuka narrowed the margin, but was never able to overtake the lead as they trailed 39-37 going into halftime.

The two teams traded baskets early on in the second half. They went a combined 5-6 from the field over the first two minutes of play. SUNY Poly made a quick three pointer and followed it up with a steal and dunk to make it 50-43 over Keuka.  Jelani Fontanez quickly responded with a driving layup for Keuka to stop the small Wildcat run. The lead would never get over seven points for SUNY Poly, but the Green and Gold were never able to take the lead. They narrowed the lead to three points, 60-57, following a second chance basket by Trevor Powell. But the margin was pushed out again. Another layup by Powell made it 63-61 with 3:26 left to play. SUNY Poly would take a six point lead over Keuka. Jelani Fontanez made a layup with one minute left to make it 69-65. The Wildcats missed three of five free throws down the stretch allowing Keuka to stay in it. James Outlaw made a pair of free throws and Casey Williams made a layup with seven seconds left to make it a two point game, 71-69. Following a foul, SUNY Poly made both their free throws with five seconds left to seal the 73-69 victory.
