Women's Hoops Forces OT, Falls to Caz

Box Score

Freshman Meqala MacDonald (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) hit a layup with six seconds left in regulation to force overtime for the Keuka College women's basketball team, but Keuka fell in overtime to Cazenovia College 52-49 Wednesday evening inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.

MacDonald's layup from the block tied the score at 46, and a stingy Keuka (8-13, 7-9 NEAC) defense clamped down and did not let Cazenovia (10-14, 8-9) get off a shot in the closing seconds.

Heading to overtime, neither team scored during the first 2:32, but the Wolfpack took a 48-46 lead on a pair of free throws from senior Amanda Kubitz (Spencerport, N.Y./E.J. Wilson).

Cazenovia answered with a layup from Mary Salo (14 points, 11 rebounds), then took a 50-48 lead on a pair of free throws from Salo with 43 seconds remaining.

Kubitz hit the second of two free throws to slice the deficit to one, but D'Andrea Watson (17 points) converted both free throws for a 52-49 lead with 18 seconds left.

Keuka, which rallied from an 11-point, second-half deficit, missed a shot in the paint, and Cazenovia held on to complete the season sweep.

Senior Erica Pendrak (New York Mills, N.Y./New York Mills) led Keuka with 12 points and five rebounds.

Junior Mackenzie Cole (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) recorded 10 points with eight rebounds, sophomore Katie Stuart (Tupper Lake, N.Y./Tupper Lake) added 11 points with four rebounds, and senior Brittany Hadley (Jasper, N.Y./Jasper-Troupsburg) had nine points with eight rebounds in the loss.

Sophomore Samantha Blum (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) snared a team-high nine rebounds to go with six steals, and Kubitz added 6 assists with 5 points and 4 rebounds in Keuka's home finale.

Keuka, which trailed 23-15 at halftime, closed within 27-26 on a '3' from Pendrak, but Cazenovia responded with a 10-0 run and led 37-26.

Pendrak hit a '3' and a layup, and Cole hit a pair of free throws to slice the deficit to 37-33.

Trailing 40-33, Cole buried a jumper and a '3', but the Wildcats took a 42-38 lead on a layup from Salo with 5:21 to play.

Hadley swished a '3' to make it a one-point game, and Cole made a pair of free throws for a 43-43 Keuka lead.

Erin O'Malley made a jumper and Salo converted a putback for a 46-43 Cazenovia lead, but Stuart hit one of two free throws to trim the deficit to 46-44, setting the stage for MacDonald's clutch layup that forced overtime.

The Green and Gold are currently tied with Wells College for fourth place in the NEAC North Division, half a game behind Cazenovia.

The top three teams from each division, along with the fourth-place squad that wins the crossover contest, advance into the NEAC postseason tournament, Feb. 28-March 1.

Keuka has two conference games remaining to secure a postseason berth. The Wolfpack travel to SUNY Polytechnic for a 5 p.m. contest Friday night before closing out the regular season at SUNY Cobleskill at 1 p.m. Saturday.
