Men's Hoops Falls Late at Wells

Senior Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, N.Y./Red Jacket) scored 18 points with six rebounds and classmate Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) added 15 points, but the Keuka College men's basketball team fell at Wells College 67-61 Wednesday night in Aurora, N.Y.

Senior Adam Starks (Wellsville, N.Y./Andover) added 10 points with five steals, and freshman Greg Tyler (Edgewater, Md./Southern) scored a career-high 10 points with 3 assists and 2 steals in the loss.

Junior Casey Williams (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) totaled five points with seven rebounds as Keuka (11-8, 8-5 NEAC) split the season-series with Wells (6-15, 6-7).

Healey, a two-time All-North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) forward needs 10 points to eclipse 1,000 points and become just the 11th student-athlete in program history to surpass 1,000 career points.

The Wolfpack trailed 48-43 with 13:25 remaining in the second half before going on an 8-0 run. Tyler hit four free throws, Hixson added a pair of free throws, and Starks and freshman Cliff Stevens (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) each made a free throw to spark the run.

Wells took a 52-51 lead on a triple from Chris Courtney (11 points) with 7:13 to play, but Tyler gave the Green and Gold a 53-52 lead when he swished a pair of free throws with 5:15 remaining.

The Express hit their next eight free throws for a 60-53 lead, and but Tyler made a layup, Starks hit a pair of free throws and Hixson drove the lane and made a layup to pull the Green and Gold within 60-59 with 1:20 to play.

Darius Smith (11) knocked down a triple for a 63-59 lead, but Tyler cut the deficit to 63-61 with a driving layup with 30 seconds remaining.

But the Wolfpack were unable to draw any closer and suffered the road loss.

Keuka shot 47.6 percent from the floor (20 of 42) and forced Wells to commit 20 turnovers, but the Green and Gold committed 22 turnovers in the loss.

Jordan Jean led Wells with 20 points and six rebounds.

With four conference games remaining, Keuka sits in second place in the NEAC North, two games behind SUNY Cobleskill (12-9, 10-3). The top three teams from each division advance into the NEAC postseason tournament, Feb. 28-March 1.
