Men's Hoops Outlasts Morrisville in Instant Classic

Box Score

Junior Vinney Zambito (Elba, N.Y./Batavia Notre Dame) hit a jumper at the elbow with 7.9 seconds remaining, and the Keuka College men's basketball team held on for a 59-58 win over Morrisville State Wednesday night in Morrisville, N.Y.

Trailing 58-57, Zambito got the ball at half court, took several dribbles, then pulled up on his defender and buried the jumper to give the Wolfpack (7-3, 4-0 NEAC) the lead.

Morrisville State (4-6, 1-2), the three-time defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions, had a shot to win at the buzzer, but Trent Ward missed a '3' from the left wing and Keuka held on for the win.

The Wolfpack have won five straight games and remained in sole possession of first place in the NEAC North following the win against the Mustangs, who advanced into the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III tournament last year.

"We have an upperclassmen-led team this year, and last year, we had a lot of close games where our guys had to learn how to close out games and come away with the win," said Thad Phillips, Keuka's fifth-year head coach.

"Last year, Vinney missed a couple of shots that could have ended a game, but he's learning and tonight he hit one. Our guys are all learning how to make those big plays at the end of games. Vinney made a big play for us and we got a big win. Anytime you can win, especially a road conference game, it's a great win for us."

Senior Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) posted his third double-double of the year with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, N.Y./Red Jacket) added 14 points with eight rebounds for the Wolfpack, who led by as many as 17 points in the second half.

Healey, a two-time All-NEAC forward, scored in double figures for the ninth time in nine games to power the Wolfpack.

Zambito finished with a game-high six assists and five points, senior Jared Wagner (Pittsford, N.Y./McQuaid) added 8 points with 4 rebounds and 3 assists, and junior Casey Williams (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) snared seven rebounds in the win.

Keuka shot 42.6 percent from the floor (23 of 54) while holding Morrisville to 35.1 percent shooting (20 of 57).

The Green and Gold enjoyed a 46-27 edge in rebounding, including 14-8 on the offensive glass, led by Hixson, who collected five offensive rebounds.

The Wolfpack took a 44-27 lead on Wagner's '3' with 11:50 remaining, but the Mustangs went on a 24-9 run and trailed only 53-51 on Unel Daley's '3' with 2:19 remaining.

Wagner swished a pair of free throws for a 55-51 edge, but Ibrahima Toure hit a layup to slice the lead to two. Healey answered with a layup, part of a 14-point second-half output, but Daley responded with a '3' and a layup to give the Mustangs a 58-57 lead with 22 seconds to play.

Keuka called timeout, setting the stage for Zambito's late-game heroics as the Wolfpack held on for the thrilling victory.

The Wolfpack led for most of the first half, but the lead was only 18-17 after 13:33 seconds in the opening half. Healey hit a jumper, Wagner made a '3' and Hixson hit a layup to spark the Green and Gold to a 15-6 run to close out the half up 33-23.

Healey scored three baskets, senior Adam Starks (Wellsville, N.Y./Andover) added a jumper and Wagner knocked down a '3' to give Keuka its largest lead of the game, 44-27.

Daley, who was held scoreless in the first half, sparked the Morrisville comeback effort, scoring all 14 of his points in the second half. Toure led the Mustangs with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Ward added 14 points in a losing effort.

The Green and Gold continue a four-game road trip to open 2015 with a 3 p.m. NEAC clash Saturday against Penn State-Abington. Keuka's 2015 home opener is against Lancaster Bible College at 8 p.m. Jan. 23.
