Women's Hoops Can't Rally Past Cazenovia

Box Score

Senior Erica Pendrak (New Hartford, N.Y./New York Mills) and junior Mackenzie Cole (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) each scored 12 points, but the Keuka College women's basketball team opened the second semester with a 53-47 loss to Cazenovia College Saturday in Cazenovia, N.Y.

Pendrak also had three steals with three rebounds, while senior Amanda Kubitz (Spencerport, N.Y./E.J. Wilson) snared a team-high nine rebounds for the Wolfpack (1-6, 1-2 NEAC).

Classmate Brittany Hadley (Jasper, N.Y./Jasper-Troupsburg) had eight rebounds with five points, and sophomore Katie Stuart (Tupper Lake, N.Y./Tupper Lake) scored eight points for the Green and Gold.

Keuka held Cazenovia (3-6, 1-1) to just 28 percent shooting from the floor (14 of 50), but the Wolfpack shot just 23.1 percent (15 of 65) in dropping their second straight NEAC contest.

Pendrak knocked down a bucket for an early 2-0 lead, and the Wolfpack kept Cazenovia scoreless for the first two minutes and 32 seconds of the opening half.

The two schools traded baskets, but Keuka trailed 13-12 after Taylor Spranger made a '3' with 10:16 remaining in the first.

The Wolfpack then went on a 9-2 run to take a 21-15 lead with 5:45 remaining. Sophomore Chinyere Ukwu (Roosevelt, N.Y./St. Dominic) buried a jumper to start the run, Pendrak hit five free throws, and Hadley and sophomore Tally McDonald (Romulus, N.Y./Romulus) each hit a free throw during the spurt.

But the Wildcats closed out the half on an 8-1 run and took a 23-22 lead into intermission.

Cazenovia's lead grew to 28-22 before Stuart hit a layup and a jumper to slice the deficit to 28-26 5:03 into the second.

Keuka hung around and trailed 42-39 on Cole's '3' with 4:50 remaining in the half. But Cazenovia scored on three straight possessions and led 49-43 on Skylar Girard's '3' with 2:36 to play.

Sophomore Samantha Blum (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) made a jumper to trim the deficit to 49-45 with 1:35 remaining, but the Wolfpack couldn't draw any closer and dropped their 2015 opener.

Girard led Cazenovia with 15 points. She was the only Wildcat to reach double-figures against Keuka.

The Green and Gold continue a four-game road trip with a 5 p.m. NEAC clash Wednesday night against Morrisville State. Keuka's 2015 home opener is against Lancaster Bible College at 6 p.m. Jan. 23.
