Box Score The Keuka College men's soccer team played an even first half with a talented Alfred University squad Saturday night under the lights at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
But Keuka (2-1) were done in during a rough and physical second half.
The Saxons (3-1) scored twice during the first 25 minutes of the half and controlled possession for most of the contest to snap the Keuka's two-game, season-opening winning streak.
Senior Austin Gerber (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) scored his team-leading fifth goal, and junior Preston Vick (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall) made seven saves in a losing effort.
Alfred took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Jeff Thomas ripped a shot that caromed off the post, out to Kyle Craver, who sent a one-touch shot to the far post from six-yards out.
The Saxons controlled possession against Keuka for much of the opening half, but the Green and Gold broke through for the equalizer late in the half.
Off a free kick, Gerber blasted a 30-yard shot that sailed into the lower corner of the goal to pull the Green and Gold even with 4:32 remaining before halftime.
The Saxons outshot the Wolfpack 13-3 in the first half, but Keuka enjoyed a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Alfred took the lead back 6:34 into the second half. Omar Mohammed scored from 12 yards out towards the near post for a 2-1 edge, and the Saxons, who controlled the tempo for most of the second half, tacked on an insurance goal with 15:25 remaining. Graeme Corrigan corralled a rebound and converted a goal into the far post for a 3-1 lead, and the Wolfpack were unable to mount a comeback.
Alfred enjoyed a 25-3 edge in shots. Keuka College, meanwhile, was called for seven yellow cards.
The Green and Gold host Cazenovia College at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in the NEAC opener for both schools.
