Box Score Sophomore Zach Briggs (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) netted the game-winning goal on a header in overtime to lead the Keuka College men's soccer team to a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over Alfred State Wednesday night.
Off a corner kick from sophomore Leandro Curran (New York, N.Y./Westlake), Briggs, a 6-foot-2 defender, leapt for the ball in the box and headed in the first game-winning goal of his Keuka College career with six minutes remaining in overtime to lift the Green and Gold to victory in Alfred, N.Y.
Senior Austin Gerber (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) scored twice for his second multi-goal performance of the year, and junior Preston Vick (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall) stopped five shots as Keuka (5-1) won their third straight.
The Green and Gold trailed 2-1 after Alfred State (2-4) took the lead on a goal in the 73rd minute on a 23-yard direct kick goal from Mitchell Porter.
Alfred State peppered Vick with shots the remainder of regulation, but Vick made two big saves to keep it a one-goal game.
Gerber finally broke through for the tying goal with 4:33 remaining in regulation. Off a cross from junior Ben Schreiber (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton), Gerber ripped a shot into the far corner of the net to tie the score at 2-all.
A stifling Keuka defense did not allow Alfred State to threaten in the overtime period, setting up Briggs' game-winning goal.
Gerber, who leads Keuka with eight goals in six games, staked Keuka College to a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Curran lobbed a pass over the defense for Gerber, who scored on a breakaway.
Alfred State pulled even on a goal from Nick Peraino 1:41 into the second half, and neither team scored again until Porter's tally early in the second.
Keuka College enjoyed a 16-12 edge in shots, and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Green and Gold travel to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Penn College for a 3 p.m. clash Saturday afternoon.
