Box Score 2 The Keuka College men's basketball team heads into the semester break on a three-game winning streak after a pair of dramatic wins over SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Polytechnic (formerly SUNYIT) Saturday and Sunday inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Junior Casey Williams (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) scored 13 points, and senior Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) added 10 points with five rebounds in Saturday's 50-47 win over SUNY Cobleskill.
On Sunday, senior Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, N.Y./Red Jacket) scored 21 of his season-high 27 points in the second half as the Wolfpack (5-3, 2-0 NEAC) rallied from a 35-19 deficit to knock off SUNY Poly 68-64 in overtime.
The Green and Gold converted on 9 of 10 free throws to start the overtime period, and Keuka led 65-62 after Williams and junior Vinney Zambito (Elba, N.Y./Batavia Notre Dame) each hit a pair of free throws late in overtime.
Zambito added a pair of free throws for a 67-62 lead with 12 seconds left, but Maverick Hodge hit a layup with four seconds remaining to pull SUNY Poly (2-4, 1-1) within 67-64.
Senior Adam Starks (Wellsville, N.Y./Andover) hit a free throw to clinch the win and send Keuka into the semester break on a three-game winning streak.
Hixson connected on 66.7 percent of his shots (10 of 15), while Healey scored 19 points with nine rebounds, and Williams added 10 rebounds with 8 points and 5 assists in the win over SUNY Poly.
Healey shot 58.3 percent (7 of 12) from the floor as the Wolfpack shot 43.8 percent (21 of 48), while holding Poly to 37.3 percent shooting (22 of 59).
Hixson also made all seven of his free throws and Zambito hit all six of his free throws as the Green and Gold made 71.4 percent of their free throws (25 of 35).
Keuka trailed 35-19 early in the second half, but Hixson scored seven straight points, Healey added three points and Williams hit a layup to spark the Green and Gold on a 12-0 run to start the second half.
Williams' layup trimmed the deficit to 35-31 with 15:14 remaining, then Hixson hit back-to-back jumpers, Starks knocked down a '3', and freshman Cliff Stevens (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) hit a pair of free throws as the Wolfpack went on a 12-4 run.
Healey capped the run on a pair of free throws for a 43-39 lead with 9:34 remaining. Tied at 43, Hixson hit a jumper and Healey made a free throw for a 46-43 lead. Hixson knocked down a jumper for a 48-45 lead, but Thomas Lucas hit a '3' to even the score at 48 with six minutes remaining.
Hixson knocked down a pair of free throws for a 50-48 lead, but Poly hung around and led 55-54 on a three-point play from Hodge with 2:30 remaining.
Hixson knocked down a jumper for a 56-55 lead with 2:09 remaining, but Kaleel Johnson hit a free throw to knot the score, and the two schools went 0-for-5 down the stretch to force overtime.
Taking on Cobleskill, Keuka built up a 22-12 first-half lead after Zambito and Starks each hit '3s', and Healey hit a pair of layups during an 11-2 run.
Cobleskill answered with a 9-0 run as Keuka took a 22-21 lead into halftime.
The Fighting Tigers led 37-35 early in the second, but senior Jared Wagner (Pittsford, N.Y./McQuaid) hit a pair of free throws and Healey hit a layup to put Keuka up 39-37 with 8:11 remaining.
Tied at 39, Hixson scored six straight points to put the Green and Gold up 45-43 with 2:17 remaining. Alexis Nunez hit a layup to knot the score at 45 with 1:21 remaining, but Wagner hit a pair of free throws, and Starks added a free throw for a 48-45 lead with 24 seconds left.
Nunez' jumper trimmed the lead to 48-47, but Wagner hit a pair of free throws for a 50-47 lead with 11 seconds left, and the Fighting Tigers missed a pair of game-tying three-point attempts to clinch the win for Keuka.
Wagner finished with nine points, Zambito added five points with a game-high four assists, and Hixson added six points with five rebounds in the win over Cobleskill.
Keuka opens the second semester with four consecutive road games, beginning at Cazenovia on January 10th, before hosting Lancaster Bible on January 23rd.
