Box Score The Keuka College men's basketball team went on a 20-3 run bridging both halves to knock off Alfred State 74-54 Wednesday night inside the Orvis Activities Center in Alfred, N.Y.
Junior Casey Williams (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals, and senior Jared Wagner (Pittsford, N.Y./McQuaid) added 14 points with four rebounds in the win.
Senior Adam Starks (Wellsville, N.Y./Andover) added 11 points with four rebounds, and freshman Cliff Stevens (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) recorded a career-high 9 points with 5 rebounds and 3 assists in the win.
Leading 29-25 late in the first half, Wagner and freshman Greg Tyler (Edgewater, MD/Southern) converted back-to-back three-pointers to close out the half and spark the Wolfpack's (2-1) scoring run.
"When I start making shots, I get a lot of confidence, and you'll see me shoot a lot more," said Wagner, who shot 50 percent from the floor (5 of 10) and on '3s' (4 of 8).
"But everyone on our team, all of our guards can knock down '3s' and can shoot. We have a lot of confidence in our shooters. Alfred State was guarding us to shoot '3s', and we knocked them down. When they were doubling (Tyler) Hixson down low, we had lots of kick-out opportunities for our shooters to knock down some shots. We made shots, stopped them on defense and it all came together for us."
Senior Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, N.Y./Red Jacket) had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals, and junior Vinney Zambito (Elba, N.Y./Batavia Notre Dame) added six assists with four rebounds for the Wolfpack, who shot 53.8 percent from the floor (27 of 52).
The Green and Gold connected on 47.6 percent of their '3s', making 10 of 21 as seven different student-athletes hit at least one '3'.
The Wolfpack also enjoyed a 39-24 edge in rebounding, including 11-6 on the offensive glass.
Keuka took a 35-25 lead into halftime, as Wagner scored 11 points and Williams added 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in the opening half.
The Green and Gold added to the lead in the opening minutes of the half as Hixson scored three straight layup to open the second.
Starks added a jumper, Stevens knocked down a '3', and Starks converted a three-point play to cap the 20-3 run and put the Green and Gold ahead 49-28 5:18 into the second half.
Alfred State answered with a 10-3 run and closed within 52-38 on a layup from Tommy Hutson, but Keuka never let the lead dip below 14 points the rest of the way.
Freshman Josh Wahnon (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) hit a jumper and a '3', and Wagner added a '3' to extend the lead to 62-40 with 7:52 remaining, and Keuka breezed to its third straight win against the Pioneers.
"We wanted to win this game, and we also want to get better each and every game we play," said Williams, who shot 71.4 percent (5 of 7) from the floor.
"Even though Alfred State had some runs, we stayed in control, we stayed composed and we stuck to doing what we needed to do to win, which was getting the ball inside and then get the ball to our shooters. We have a lot of confidence after this win."
Early on, the Wolfpack trailed 5-3, before Stevens snared an offensive rebound and hit a layup to knot the score at 5 with 16 minutes left in the opening half.
Stevens' layup sparked the Wolfpack on a 17-5 run. Starks hit a layup and knocked down a '3', Williams and Stevens each hit layups, and Zambito knocked down a '3' for an 18-10 lead with 7:01 remaining.
Hixson capped the scoring spurt on a layup with 5:59 remaining for a 20-10 lead, but the Pioneers answered with an 11-2 run to pull within 22-21 with 4:10 left in the first.
Wagner responded with a '3' and a jumper, and Williams hit a driving layup for a 29-23 lead with 1:56 remaining. Leading 29-25, Tyler and Wagner converted on back-to-back '3s' for a 35-25 halftime lead.
The Wolfpack travel to Hamilton College for a 7 p.m. non-conference clash Saturday evening.
