Women's Hoops Hangs on at Gallaudet

Box Score

Senior Taylor Szwec (Candor, NY/Candor) scored 14 points with seven rebounds and classmate Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) added 13 points as the Keuka College women's basketball team held on for a 55-52 road win over Gallaudet (D.C.) University Saturday afternoon.

Senior Casey Chamberlain (Perry, NY/Perry) snared 12 rebounds while freshman Katie Stuart (Tupper Lake, NY/Tupper Lake) contributed 10 points and six rebounds to spark the Storm (5-4, 5-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference).

It was Chamberlain's second double-digit rebounding performance in her last three games.

Szwec scored the Storm's first five points and Gravel and junior Erica Pendrak (New Hartford, NY/New York Mills) each buried '3s' as Keuka took an 11-9 lead seven minutes into the contest.

Gravel hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead to 17-9 with 9:29 remaining in the opening half and scored all 13 of her points in the first 12:26 to give the Storm a 21-14 lead.

After Gallaudet (6-6, 3-1) went on a 5-0 to pull within two, Szwec hit two layups and Stuart and junior Brittany Hadley (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) each made layups to give the Green and Gold a 29-23 lead.

Keuka took a 29-25 halftime lead, but after Gallaudet pulled within 31-30, the Green and Gold went on an 8-0 run, fueled by a layup from Chamberlain, jumpers from Stuart and Hadley and a pair of free throws from Szwec.

Pendrak and Stuart each hit jumpers as the Storm took their largest lead of the game, 48-38 with 6:35 remaining.

Gallaudet chipped away at the lead and pulled within 52-47 before Szwec made a jumper for a 54-47 edge with 1:32 remaining. Danielle Warren hit a jumper and a '3' to trim the Keuka lead to 54-52 with 27 seconds remaining, but Szwec hit a free throw and Keuka held on for the win.

Gravel continues to climb Keuka's all-time scoring list. With her effort against Gallaudet, the two-time first-team All-NEAC guard needs 43 points to become the 12th student-athlete in school history to surpass 1,000 career points.

The Green and Gold return home for a 7 p.m. non-conference game with Alfred University Tuesday night.
