The Keuka College men's volleyball team hosted SUNYIT and D'Youville College for a non-conference tri-match competition inside the Weed Physical Arts Center Saturday afternoon, and the Storm suffered a pair of four-set setbacks.
In each match, the Green and Gold split the first two sets, but couldn't come up with the win.
Keuka (3-12) fell to SUNYIT by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-21 before losing to D'Youville by scores of 25-21, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-22.
For the two matches, freshman Connor Hinman (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) had 28 kills and 11 digs, junior Devin Lesch (San Diego, CA/El Cajon Valley) had 14 kills, 16 digs and 4 blocks and freshman Josh Makin (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) chipped in with 11 kills, 12 digs and 9 blocks for the Storm.
Freshman Christopher Mooring (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) added 18 digs and 11 kills while sophomore Ryan Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) had 69 assists, 13 digs and 4 blocks for the Green and Gold.
Lesch had nine kills with one error in 19 attempts (.421 attack percentage) while Hinman added 12 kills, 3 aces and 3 digs in the loss to IT. Mooring added seven digs and six kills while Kelly had 37 assists and six digs and freshman Luke Ferruzza (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) added 7 digs, 6 kills and 2 blocks for Keuka.
After dropping the third set vs. IT, Keuka trailed 18-15 in the fourth. Hinman posted back-to-back aces to even the score at 18, but the Storm couldn't complete the comeback and fell to the Wildcats for the third time this year.
Against D'Youville, Hinman had 16 kills, 8 digs and 2 blocks, sophomore Manny Fernandez (Tacoma, WA/Spanaway) added 14 digs, 7 kills and 3 blocks, Lesch had 6 digs, 5 kills and 4 blocks and Kelly added 32 assists, 7 digs and 3 blocks.
Mooring chipped in with 11 digs and four kills while Makin added 7 total blocks, 6 digs and 4 kills. Fernandez and Lesch each had solid hitting performances, with Fernandez recording only one error in 13 attempts (.462 attac percentage) while Lesch had no errors in 17 attempts (.294 percentage).
After dropping the first set vs. D'Youville, Lesch served up and won eight straight service points as the Storm took a 15-6 lead. The Spartans (11-11) chipped away at the lead and were down 21-20 before Lesch had a kill and a block for a 23-20 lead.
Tied at 24, Fernandez and Hinman recorded back-to-back kills to close out the set, but Keuka couldn't hold on and lost its seventh-straight match.
Keuka hosts Southern Vermont College at 1 p.m. Sunday before hosting Wells College at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
