Loss to Wells Ends Season for Men's Hoops

Sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) scored 20 points with seven rebounds and senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) added 14 points, but the Keuka College men's basketball team saw its season end with a 74-64 loss to Wells College Saturday afternoon in Aurora, NY.

Keuka (10-13, 8-7 North Eastern Athletic Conference) needed a win over the Express (12-13, 8-7) to earn the program's first postseason appearance since the 2009-10 season, but was outscored 21-10 down the stretch.

The top two teams from each division along with the third-place team with the best head-to-head record advance into the NEAC postseason tournament, which runs Tuesday through Sunday, and Keuka finished as the No. 3 team in the NEAC North Division.

But the Storm lost out on the head-to-head tiebreaker with Penn State-Harrisburg, the No. 3 team in the South, since Harrisburg knocked off Keuka 80-72 on Jan. 13.

Senior Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) capped his Keuka career by scoring six points with seven rebounds, and sophomore Joe Tortolon (Dundee, NY/Dundee) came off the bench to score seven points with six rebounds in the loss.

Freshman Casey Williams (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) added eight points for Keuka, which shot 39 percent (23-for-59) while allowing Wells to shoot 48 percent (26-for-54).

Down 65-61 with 2:28 remaining, Tuggles swished a 15-foot jumper to pull Keuka within 65-63 with 2:28 remaining, but the Express outscored the Storm 9-1 to pull away and earn a spot in the postseason.

Keuka went into halftime trailing 32-30. Sophomore Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) collected a rebound and scored to tie it at 34, but the Express went on a 5-0 run to lead 39-34.

Tuggles hit a pair of free throws and Healey hit a lay-in to trim the deficit to 39-38, but Wells answered with another 5-0 run to take a 44-38. Tortolon came off the bench to score back-to-back layups for a two-point deficit, 44-42.

Sophomore Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) added consecutive layups to know the score at 46 with under 12 minutes remaining.

Trailing 50-49, Healey hit a layup, was fouled and completed the three-point play to put Keuka ahead by one with 8:08 remaining.

Williams then hit a pair of free throws for a 54-53 lead, but Wells responded with a 9-0 lead and led 62-54.

An offensive rebound and putback from Williams stopped the Wells' run, and Healey hit two free throws and a lay-in as Keuka clawed within 64-61, but the Storm couldn't pull out the win.

E.J. Taylor scored 18 points, Ryan Hood added 17 points and J.J. Walton chipped in with 16 points to power the Express, who shot 46.2 percent (6-for-13) on three-pointers.
