Balanced Men's Hoops Beats SUNY Cobleskill

Box Score

Sophomores Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) and Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) each set career-highs in scoring to power the Keuka College men's basketball team to an 89-78 win over SUNY Cobleskill Sunday afternoon inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.

Hixson scored 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting and also snared nine rebounds while Wagner added 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting, including 5-for-8 on three-pointers, as the Storm (9-9, 7-3 North Eastern Athletic Conference) scored their most points in a game this season.

It's the first time the Green and Gold have had a .500 record since Jan. 9, 2010, when Keuka was 4-4. The Storm haven't been above .500 since a 4-3 record following a win over Morrisville State on Dec. 9, 2009.

Wagner added a career-high seven assists while senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) had 15 points and four assists and freshman Casey Williams (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) chipped in 14 points as the Storm placed five in double-figures.

Sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) had 16 points and six rebounds while senior Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the win as the Green and Gold completed a season sweep of Cobleskill (5-14, 3-6).

Tuggles sits 29 points shy of becoming just the 10th student-athlete at Keuka to score 1,000 career points.

Wagner scored 14 points in the first half, making 4 of 5 three-point attempts, while Boyer snared eight rebounds and had four assists in the first as Keuka took a 36-25 lead.

The Storm shot 42.9 percent in the half (15-for-35) while holding Cobleskill to 26.5 percent shooting (9-for-34), including just 21.4 percent on '3s' (3-for-14).

Keuka led for much of the first half, including 22-18 before Wagner and freshman Vinney Zambito (Elba, NY/Batavia Notre Dame) each made '3s' to extend the lead to 28-18.

In the second half, the Tigers clawed within 38-32 before Healey hit a layup and Wagner knocked down a '3' for a 43-32 lead with 16:52 remaining.

The lead grew to 48-36 when Tuggles made his only '3' of the contest with 14 minutes left, but Kareem Bernard buried three '3s' to get Cobleskill within 50-47 with 12:29 remaining.

Hixson made a layup and a pair of free throws while Boyer added a layup as the Storm went on a 6-0 run to lead 56-47. The Green and Gold held at least a nine-point edge until Tyrone Mitchell converted a three-point play that pulled Cobleskill within 70-64 with 2:29 to play.

Alexis Nunez's three-point play pulled the Tigers within 79-74 with 1:03 remaining, but the Storm made nine of 10 free throws to pull away and remain in second place in the NEAC North. Tuggles went 10-for-12 at the free throw line, including hitting seven in a row to seal the win.

Bernard finished with 22 points while Nunez had 15 for Cobleskill, which was outrebounded by Keuka 51-32.

Keuka travels to Morrisville State for a 7 p.m. clash Wednesday night before returning home to face Penn State-Abington at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3.
