Box Score The Keuka College women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Penn State-Harrisburg Lions Sunday afternoon as part of the college's Family Weekend activities at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
The Storm (2-3-1, 2-2-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference) allowed only a 13th-minute goal against Harrisburg (3-2, 2-1 NEAC), but still came away empty-handed against its NEAC rivals despite holding the Lions scoreless for the game's final 77:20.
There was some drama late in the contest, as it appeared freshman midfielder Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport) broke in on goal and booted a ball into the back of the net with two minutes to play, but the referees ruled there was an offsides violation against Keuka and Swarts' potential game-tying goal was nullified. Despite applying constant pressure the rest of the way, the Storm couldn't net the equalizer.
After a scoreless first 12 minutes, Harrisburg struck first, scoring off a scramble in front of the Keuka goal. Tina Martino collected a loose ball right in front of the goal and pushed a shot that bounded into the back of the net in the 13th minute for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 through the rest of the half. Early in the second half, the Storm attack showed signs of life. Sophomore Stephanie Havens (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) slotted a ball to junior Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), but Martino, who switched from a field player into goal following an injury, came out and made the diving save on Capek's shot.
A short while later, senior Elly Disbrow (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) found Havens inside the box, but Havens' shot was also saved by Martino to preserve the one-goal lead.
Senior Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) made six saves for the Storm, including several from in close to keep the deficit at one goal.
With 10:06 remaining, Engelbert made a big save on Harrisburg's Nikki Francis. Francis beat her defender and was one-on-one with Engelbert right outside the net, but Engelbert corralled the point-blank shot.
The Storm return to action with a 7 p.m. home game Wednesday night against Alfred University.
