2016-17 Season Preview: Women’s Basketball

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The 2016-17 edition of the Keuka College Women's Basketball team will tipoff their season tonight, hosting SUNY Canton at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.

Returning for her third season at Keuka College is Head Coach Sarah Gaffney. Last year the Green and Gold went 8-16 and finished in a tie for fourth place in the North Eastern Athletic Conference North Division, but Keuka did not qualify for the conference tournament.

"We brought in a large freshman class to add to our depth this season," said Gaffney. "With that class, the team will be very young. We only have 2 seniors and no juniors. As a team, we have more fitness and our guards have improved their ball handling. In the post, we will now have some size and depth that should help us compete."

The Class of 2017 for Keuka College will consist of Katie Stuart and Courtney Boyea. Stuart has started every game for Keuka College the past two season and has appeared in 70 games overall in her career. She was the leading scorer for the Green and Gold last season, averaging 13.4 points per game. Courtney Boyea is in her second season at Keuka College after transferring from North Country Community College. The senior is a three-point specialist, making 38.3% of her threes last season, ranking fifth in the NEAC.

Without a junior on the roster, it will be up to the sophomore class to step up in a leadership role this season. Lauren Anten returns after averaging 10.1 points and 5.7 rebounds as a freshman, second most on the team in each category. Also back for Coach Gaffney are Sarah Tyler and Abby Hess. Both averaged over 15 minutes a game as a freshman. Joining the sophomore class is transfer Reighly Melochick. The guard was a 2,000 point scorer in high school and averaged 10 points per game in her freshman season at Division II Goldey-Beacom College.

Coach Gaffney added nine freshman to the roster this season. The influx of young talent bring in added athleticism and much needed depth and versatility to the roster. This group includes a pair of 1,000 point scorers, five sectional championships, and two all-state selections. The group of guards consists of Cassidy Albright, Britta Berguson, Arianna DeNault, Sam Laranjo, and Brooke Overton. Freshman forwards for Coach Gaffney include Tiffany Binion, Alexa Brown, Brooklyn Camarra, and Niki Templeton.

Keuka College was picked to finish ninth in the NEAC Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Green and Gold were ranked as the fifth best team in the conference's North Division. Defending champion SUNY Poly was picked atop the poll with fellow division-mate Morrisville State finishing in second.

The Women's Basketball team opens at home, but then features a near two month break from the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center. The Wolves will open conference play on November 30 at Morrisville State. They then follow that up with road conference games against SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Poly before the holiday break. The Wolves will return home in 2017 with their NEAC home-opener against Wells College on January 11. The season will conclude in February with Keuka College hosting the College of St. Elizabeth in their annual Parents' and Senior Day.

The lone home game of the fall semester for the Green and Gold will be tonight as Keuka College hosts SUNY Canton at 6pm at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.
