Keuka College Falls at Home to Alfred State

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – In their first game back from winter break, the Keuka College Women's Basketball team fell to Alfred State 56-50 on Wednesday night at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.

The Green and Gold fall to 2-6 on the season. They return to North Eastern Athletic Conference action this Saturday as they travel to Aurora, N.Y. to face Wells College.

Katie Stuart led the way for Keuka with a game-high 13 points. Courtney Boyea and Sarah Janson each added eight points. Janson tied for the team lead in rebounding as well with seven. She was tied with Samantha Blum and Lauren Anten.

The two teams came out flying in the first quarter. The Pioneers shot 71.4% from the field in the opening frame to build an early lead. Keuka kept the game close with four three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes. Alfred State held a 23-15 advantage after the first.

The Green and Gold fought to stay in the game, outscoring Alfred State in the second. Keuka held an 11-6 rebounding advantage in the frame. The Pioneers maintained their lead, however, going into halftime leading 34-29.

Both teams struggled from the field in the third, shooting a combined 18%, however Keuka was able to go on a 7-1 run over the final six minutes of the period. Sarah Tyler capped the run with a layup with 16 seconds left to tie the game at 37-37 going into the fourth.

The final quarter saw Alfred State reestablish their lead, but Keuka remained within striking distance. With 4:25 left, Courtney Boyea drilled a three pointer to give Keuka their first lead, 41-40, since they were up 3-2, 47 seconds into the game. The Pioneers took the lead back, but Keuka jumped back ahead on a deep jumper by Sarah Janson. Alfred State responded with a quick 8-0 run over the next minute to take control of the game back. The Pioneers would go on to defeat Keuka 56-50.
