Women’s Basketball Slips Up at Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Keuka College Women's Basketball team fell on Saturday on the road at SUNY Cobleskill by the score of 59-56.

The loss levels Keuka's North Eastern Athletic Conference record at 1-1. Overall, Keuka is 2-4 on the season. The Green and Gold will remain on the road on Sunday as they face SUNY Poly.

Captains Katie Stuart and Mackenzie Cole each had 17 points for Keuka in the loss. Cole's points came on the back of three three-pointers. She also led the team with seven rebounds.

Keuka had the advantage in shooting percentage, shooting nearly 43% from the floor. However, the Fighting Tigers used their rebounding advantage to score 23 second change points.

Keuka got out to a fast lead against Cobleskill, leading 7-2 in the opening three minutes. The early margin was enough for the Green and Gold to lead 12-9 after the first quarter.

The Green and Gold used a 9-2 to grow their lead to nine points,  20-11, capped by a Cole jumper with three minutes left in the half. Overall, Keuka outscored Cobleskill 15-6 in the quarter and carried a 27-15 lead into the halftime break.

SUNY Cobleskill broke out in the third quarter, scoring 29 points in the frame. They used a 9-0 run over a minute and twenty seconds to draw the game level at 34-34. Keuka quickly took a five point lead back after a layup by Stuart and a three-pointer by Cole, but the Tigers continued to attack. They hit a three as the buzzer sounded on the quarter to tie the game at 44-44 going into the final 10 minutes of play.

The game remained close and was bound to go down to the wire. Down by four points with under a minute to play, Lauren Anten made a layup and was fouled. Following the successful free throw, Keuka trailed by one with 10 seconds left to play. Cobleskill was quickly fouled and made both of their free throws to bring the margin back to three. Keuka made a basket, but once again the Fighting Tigers made their free throws to regain the three point margin, the final difference in the 59-56 Cobleskill victory.
