Women’s Basketball Falls in Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- The Keuka College Women's Basketball team dropped their season opener to host Manhattanville College by the score of 74-57 at the Battle of the Castle Tournament.

Keuka (0-1) will face Washington College in the consolation game on Sunday at 12pm.

Junior Katie Stuart led Keuka with a career-high 24 points. Lauren Anten added nine points and had a team-leading eight rebounds in her freshman debut.

Manhattanville scored the opening six points of the game until Stuart netted the first two points of the season for Keuka on a pair of free throws.  Courtney Boyea hit a three pointer to give Keuka a 10-9 lead by the Valiants took the ball right back. They led for the rest of the quarter until Lauren Anten hit a three as time expired to give the Green and Gold an 18-17 lead.

Keuka and Manhattanville each shot 44% in the second quarter, but Manhattanville forced seven Keuka turnovers in the quarter and turned those into points as they won the quarter 20-10 and carried a 38-27 lead into halftime.

Keuka continued to fight in the third. A layup by Stuart got the margin back to 10 points, 43-33, but the home team grew their lead to as many as 16 in the quarter. Lauren Anten once again hit a late three pointer, this time with four seconds left in the quarter, but Manhattanville led after three, 54-41.

The Valiants forced 11 Keuka turnovers in the fourth quarter. Overall, they scored 37 points off turnovers on their way to the 74-57 victory over Keuka College.

The Green and Gold outshot Manhattanville, shooting 41.5% from the field. However the Valiants held the advantage in points off turnovers, 37-11, and second chance points, 24-13.
