The Keuka College women's basketball team led perennial power SUNY Geneseo for much of Thursday night's home opener, but the Storm suffered a 70-51 setback inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Senior Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) scored a season-most 16 points to go with 6 assists and 5 steals and classmate Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) scored 14 points with four steals, but the Storm (0-2) were done in by a 27-1 Geneseo run.
The Knights (3-0) outrebounded the Storm 47-21, including 20-5 on the offensive glass. Allison McKenna scored a game-high 19 points with 11 rebounds while Dana Cohan added 12 points, 4 assists and 3 steals and Shannon McGinnis had 10 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for the Knights.
The Storm started slow against the Knights, committing five turnovers in the game's first 3:30 as Geneseo surged out to a 10-0 lead.
But the Green and Gold dialed in their outside game to cut into the deficit. Gravel and Bandrowski buried '3s' to slice the deficit to 12-6.
Trailing 14-8, Bandrowski banked in a triple off the glass to slice the deficit to three, but the Knights got a '3' from Kayleigh Cavanaugh and a pair of free throws from Katie Durand to take a 19-11 lead, but Hadley hit a free throw and Bandrowski got a steal and converted the fast-break layup as Keuka trailed 19-14 with 10:21 remaining.
Gravel drained a '3' that kick-started the Storm on an 11-2 run. She added a layup and Chamberlain hit another '3' to give the Green and Gold their first lead, 22-21 with 5:42 remaining.
The Knights' lead swelled to 30-25 on a jumper from Dana Cohan with 2:13 left, but the Storm closed out the half on a 9-0 run to take a 34-30 lead at intermission.
Gravel hit her third '3' of the half, Bandrowski buried back-to-back layups and Szwec swished a pair of free throws late in the half to give the Storm the halftime lead.
Senior Brittany Sinnott (Mt. Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) hit a jumper in the lane to extend the Storm's lead to 36-30, but Geneseo answered with an 11-4 run and led 41-40 with 14:42 remaining.
Szwec buried her only '3' of the contest to give the Green and Gold a 43-41 lead with 14:23 remaining, but Geneseo went on a 27-1 run, connecting on four three-pointers.
Keuka, which hit on 6 of 11 '3s' during the opening half, made only 3 of 13 in the second half, while Geneseo connected on 5 of 11 shots from three-point range after halftime.
Originally slated for a 3 p.m. tipoff, Saturday's non-conference contest between the Storm and William Smith College will now start at 7 p.m. inside the Bristol Gymnasium on the Hobart and William Smith campus. Admission is free for fans.
The game time had to be shifted because William Smith is hosting NCAA tournament games in women's soccer and football, on top of hosting hockey and basketball contests.
The two schools often square off annually, with William Smith earning a 99-78 win over the Storm on Nov. 19, 2011. Keuka last beat the Herons 72-67 at home on Dec. 9, 2010.
