Keuka College Softball Splits at RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Keuka College Softball team split at the Rochester Institute of Technology on Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader.

Keuka College (13-17) took the opening game against the hosts in nine innings 4-2. The Tigers however responded and won game two 2-1.

Keuka College 4 at RIT 2 – Game One, 9 innings

The Wolves took the lead in unusual fashion in the top of the first inning. After Jessie Hammers led off with a bunt single, Danielle Bosch laid down a sacrifice bunt. The throw from the third baseman got past the first baseman. The ball took an odd bounce off of the fence and got past the right fielder as well, allowing both Hammers and Bosch to score to give Keuka College a 2-0 lead.

RIT took advantage of a Keuka College error to score a run in the fourth. The Tigers then tied it up in the fifth and threatened in the seventh. A pair of singles put the game-winning run on second base with one out, but starting pitcher Colleen Mooney got the next batter to hit a groundball to second baseman Hayley Gorges. Gorges tagged the runner out running to second and then threw the ball to first for the inning-ending double play, sending the game to extra innings.

The Wolves threatened in the top of the eighth as Hammers led off with a single and stole second. She was then bunted to third, but was stranded.

Keuka College took the lead in the top of the ninth. The Wolves loaded the bases with two walks and an error. Shelby Burgess grounded out to second to score a run and give Keuka the lead. Jessie Hammers then singled to centerfield to add an insurance run for the Wolves. Keuka College closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth as they defeated RIT 4-2.

Lead Wolf: Jessie Hammers provided most of the offense for the Wolves. The junior had three of Keuka College's four hits. Hammers also stole a pair of bases in the win.

RIT 2 vs. Keuka College 1 – Game Two

RIT struck first in game two as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Keuka College responded in the top of the second as Jordan Cole singled. Hayley Gorges followed that with a single behind Cole to right field, allowing Cole to go to third. She scored on a groundout to tie the game at 1-1.

The Wolves threatened in the fourth as they loaded the bases with one out, but a 1-2-3 double play ended with inning without Keuka scoring a run.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth. RIT led the inning off with a double and followed it with a single. The Tigers would get a sacrifice fly to take the 2-1 lead.

Keuka College would get one a two-out hit in the top of the seventh but would be unable to tie it as they fell to RIT 2-1 in game two.

Lead Wolves: Both Jessie Hammers and Jordan Cole each had a pair of hits in the loss. Whitney Tyler struck out five batters for Keuka College.

  • The Wolves snapped a three-game losing streak in extra innings in game one
  • Jessie Hammers had five hits on the day. The junior now has 140 in her career, tying Denise Bilbow for second on the career hits list
  • Colleen Mooney became just the fourth pitcher in Keuka College history to surpass 200 career strikeouts
  • Janessa Vaadi recorded a hit in game two, setting a new career-high for hits in a season for the senior
