KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Softball team lost a doubleheader to Alfred University on Tuesday at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Keuka College (5-9) lost the opening game 5-2. The Wolves and the Saxons then went to extra innings in game two. Alfred edged Keuka 4-3 in eight innings.
Alfred University 5 at Keuka College 2 – Game One
The Saxons pulled ahead in the top of the third inning as Alfred scored a run on a squeeze bunt for a 1-0 lead. The Wolves quickly answered in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles by Ann Stull and Danielle Bosch led off the inning. After being bunted over, Stull scored on a passed ball. Keuka then took the lead as Jessie Hammers singled home Bosch for the 2-1 advantage.
Alfred took advantage of a leadoff single in the fourth. The runner advanced to third on a pair of stolen bases and then scored on a groundout to tie the game. The Saxons regained the lead with three runs in the fifth to pull ahead 5-2. Alfred University would go onto win game one by that score.
Lead Wolf: Jessie Hammers' RBI single in the third inning extended her hitting streak to 11games, tying her career-high.
Alfred University 4 at Keuka College 3 – Game Two, 8 innings
After a scoreless four innings, Alfred University took the lead. The Saxons doubled down the left field line. Then with two outs, the Saxons dropped a ball over third base and into the outfield for the 1-0 lead.
The Wolves pulled level in the bottom of the inning. Whitney Tyler led the inning off with a single and moved to third on a double by Jessie Hammers. The Green and Gold would later advantage of a pair of errors to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead over the Saxons.
The Wolves started the top of the seventh strong on defense as Alfred led off the inning with a double to left, but Janessa Vaadi hit cutoff man Jessie Hammers who relayed it to Brittany Vergason to get the runner trying to stretch it into a triple. However, with two outs, Alfred got a single and stole second. They followed that with a single to score the tying run as the game would go to extra innings.
The Saxons had a pair of doubles to score two runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom, a pair of groundouts for Keuka scored a run, but a strikeout would end the game as the Wolves lost game two 4-3 in eight innings.
Lead Wolves: Hammers continued to swing the bat well. The junior finished with two hits, including a double. Two of Keuka's three runs were scored by Brittany Vergason.
- The Saxons have now won 12 straight games against Keuka College. Alfred leads the all-time series 24-8
- Tuesday was the third time that Keuka College played into extra innings. The Wolves are 0-3 in those games
- All three extra-inning games this season have been complete-game pitching outings by Whitney Tyler
- Jessie Hammers extended her hitting streak to 12 games, setting a new career-best and tying for second longest in program history
- Janessa Vaadi had her career-best hitting streak of seven games snapped in game one, but rebounded with a hit in game two
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will take to the road this weekend for a tough test in Pennsylvania as they face Penn St.-Berks and Penn St.-Abington in a pair of conference doubleheaders. Saturday's games at Berks will be a rematch of the last three North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships.
