KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Softball team combined for 28 runs as the Wolves swept a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader against SUNY Poly on Saturday.
Keuka College (9-7, 6-2 NEAC) won the opener against the Wildcats 15-5 in five innings. The Green and Gold then scored 13 runs in game two, defeating SUNY Poly 13-5 in five innings.
Keuka College 15 vs. SUNY Poly 5 – 5 innings
Keuka College struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Jessie Hammers led off with a single. Following a bunt, Mickenzie Palmer singled her home. Katelyn Warren and Janessa Vaadi each singled to load the bases. A Maddie Dupuis sacrifice fly scored a run as did RBI singles by Shannon Johnson and Alexa Brown. The lineup turned over for the Wolves and Hammers cleared the bases with a triple for Keuka College. With the bases loaded, Katelyn Warren hit a grand slam for the Wolves to take an 11-0 lead in the first inning. In total in the first inning, Keuka brought 17 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs on 11 hits for the 12-0 lead.
SUNY Poly would outscore Keuka College 5-3 in the remaining innings, but the Wolves finished off the 15-5 victory in five innings in game one.
Lead Wolf: Senior Katelyn Warren went 3-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and a grand slam. Warren scored a pair of runs and drove in six for the Wolves, setting a new career-high for runs batted in and tying for fourth most in a game in program history.
Keuka College 13 vs. SUNY Poly 5 – 5 innings
SUNY Poly responded in game two with a loud first inning. The Wildcats plated four runs in the first before Keuka College came to the plate. However, Keuka responded in the bottom of the first with five runs. The big hit came in the inning was from Shannon Johnson. The senior hit her first career home run, a grand slam, as Keuka College led 5-4 after the first inning.
The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the second, but the Green and Gold regained the lead in the bottom. Mickenzie Palmer and Katelyn Warren each had RBI singles in the inning as the Wolves were up 7-5.
The lead would grow to seven runs, 12-5, going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Katelyn Warren led off with a walk and moved to third with two outs. Freshman Danielle Bosch singled her home to give the Wolves the 13-5 victory in five innings.
Lead Wolf: Brittany Vergason was 2-2 at the plate with a walk and sacrifice bunt. Vergason scored two runs and drove in four for the Wolves. The four runs batted in for Vergason set a new career-high for the sophomore.
